Thermal attack, impulse attack.

I get these warnings all the time now - particularly 'warning: temperature rising'. I'm not noticing abnormal levels of damage, but I do definitely notice high temperatures during combat.

Is this just a new warning for old, un-modded weapons, or are the NPCs still packing mods?

These warnings were introduced with 1.6/2.1. Some weapons, not just engineered ones, cause specific effects. Rail Guns cause the Impulse attack warning, where Plasma Accelerators cause a Heat warning. Those effects were always part of the weapons, but now we get specific notification from our Ship's AI of the effects.

You also get notifications on your HUD in your top right, under Information, when you're hit by one of these weapons/effects. As well as in the bottom left on the representation of your current target, when they've been inflicted by one.

This training video has a chart all current icons and warnings, at around 05:05

NPCs are packing modded weapons, or a few of them are after the last tweak.

I noticed a few times that after the thermal attack warning the temperature went down considerably as though I had launched a heat sink. Most times the temperature rises fast but not rapidly enough to cause too much damage. If it gets near 100% I use a heat sink, otherwise I just keep an eye on it.

Not received an impulse attack that did anything yet.

I have only noticed the Impulse attack warning when I've been under fire from Railguns. I have seen claims that associate them with Shockmines, but I have not observed this myself. The only instances where I've been warned of a Thermal attack has been when I've been hit by Plasma Accelerators.

Edit:
To be clear. These are new warnings, for old weapon categories. Not Engineer upgraded weapons.

lol, yes, I get these all the time. I understand the heat thing, but what the hell is an impulse attack? does it mean he doesn't normally fight and has changed his mind on impulse?

:)

No, it's a super smash in the side of your ship. Imaging a weapon that attacked up in much the same way as hitting it with a 100m long, 100 tonne baseball bat. Kornelius Bredis posted a video clip on Youtube of this weapon in action and his ship reached speeds of 1500ms-1 after being hit.

Lol, never really notice any effect.

So impulse attacks with concussive force instead of thermal or kinetic?

How can i get this effect myself?

Most of the NPCs I encounter these days, hit me with one or the other. (Impulse or Thermal) There is no defense against them, (engineers maybe) and it is becoming annoying to say the least. I have been at 16% master rank for months now, as all I can do is run, after 30 seconds of combat.

Arry, they are not engineered weapons. NPC's do not have engineer special attacks.

As Mohrgan said earlier they are merely warnings that the game associates with rails or plasma. They are doing nothing to you beyond what they did in any earlier version of the game, it is just you get an otiose warning now. There are the same defences against them as before, neither more nor less.

Nothing has changed.

@Furinkazan as a Cmdr you can get an impulse attack by getting the relevant special on cannons or by using shock mines. Rail guns naturally impart a tiny impulse. But be aware that this thread is old and none of these things cause major movement now.

I know and understand that the NPCs are not using 'engineered weapons'. However: These days, plasma and rail-guns are for too commonly fitted to NPCs. I am not anyway near the best combat pilot, but up until 2.1, I managed, now I feel like, I am just getting mugged.

Let have a look at your build and tactics. There are tons of amazing Commanders who frequent these forums, always interested and willing to discuss and dissect those topics.

I've found that NPC's fixed weapons can be easily avoided by using a lateral thruster (i usually use the downward one) together with your regular pitch. For some reason NPC can't get a straight shot when you do this.

I've seen the effect of impulse weapons when in a conflict zone one ship hit me from the side.. the ship in front of my view seemed to be moving as if it was shocked, but it was actually my own ship moving sideways a bit.

Tactics? Shooting them while trying not to be shot by them. Spamming chaff and SCBs and therefore heat sinks.

I use pip management, the blue zone etc. and all the thrusters, but finding it very hard to keep the target on the screen in front of me. Asps ranked below me, are kicking my behind and out maneuvering me. I never had this issue in my Cobra and would be happy to take on most ships up to dangerous rank. I am not losing ships, as I am choosing to sir robin at 60% hull.
