They don't make it easy do they?

Semi-related: If you use custom binds you get no default bindings for new features, like the Arx store this time. That's also a bit annoying - especially when there are weird priorities involved.

I tried hold left mouse button to move camera in the shop which completely disabled LMB for all other stuff and I couldn't click buttons anymore.

Me neither. But I always keep a current backup handy because you can guarantee that the day I dispense with a backup will be the day a patch is released that removes all my bindings. ;)
I don't even do that since I am mostly happy with the X52 default config. This is all I change:
Menu Back: A (not sure why this isn't in the default config)
Chaff: Pinky + B
SCB: Pinky + A

I do have backups, but the truly cunningly perversely deliberately vicious and evil thing about the disappearance of my bindings is that they never disappear until just after I've forgotten how I restored them last time.

I also have like 5 or 6 backups. Just in case. But more for my own idiocy, when I make a drunk controller change and then can't remember why in the name of the wee man I did such a stupid thing, and need to put them back the way they were.

I've lost keybindings after an update previously. I've lost ALL of them, so I'd just restore from my backup so that's no problem. However, when I just lose some of the key bindings that's a bit weird. Fairly recently - this year - there had been an update and everything was working just fine, until I tried to use one particular button and it didn't work. That single binding had been removed during the update. It was something like Heatsink or Chaff I can't recall exactly, but the binding was empty so I just added it back again.

Ages ago, I was given a tip to always ensure my stick is connected when I launch the game. There were reports of people firing up the launcher, then plugging in their stick and losing bindings . So now, even if I'm just updating the game, not playing it, I'll plug my stick in and just that stick, and other than the loss of that single binding, I've not had issues.

I have a double back-up of my bindings in effect. I make a copy of the file of course, but I also have a diagram of my X52 with the buttons labelled, in case I ever have to re-create them from scratch. Also good to have a visual reminder when I've not played for ages.

Sounds like your X52 had a driver update or wrong settings. Some of the buttons on it only work when the stick is configured correctly.

Nope, no X52 Driver update & the stick is configured correctly. Binding was there prior to the update, gone after the update. So, the button on the stick was fully functional as it had always been, it was the binding in the game that had been deleted. Simple as that really. Can't explain it. The binding was gone for that single function but easily added back again and to the original button.

I see. I often have that when I load the wrong profile, that's why I mentioned it. I believe it's the left mouse and the thumb button on the stick.

I did have a back up but I've bought a new PC since. This is the only game I've played where I've had this happen and it's the game with the most keybinds

"I bought a new pc and the files on my old computer are on my old computer."

Thoughts & prayers. If only there was a way to move files from one disk to another. Alas, maybe in four to five months!

Yeah, it's good to check these things of course :) I only have the one profile as the X52 is only used for ED. I can't recall exactly which button it was, but it was on the Throttle and used to activate either a Heat Sink or Chaff, two things only certain ships of mine have installed. For the former - something fitted to my Cutter (once upon a time) and Corvette - I rarely had cause to use them and for the latter it was pretty much exclusive to a couple of my smaller ships I don't use so much now. I'm pretty sure it must have been the Chaff button actually as I was playing around with an Asp X combat build that utilised Chaff, none of my other current builds do - plus I'd removed the Heat Sinks from the Cutter and Corvette some time ago.

Odd that one single binding could be lost like that, yet all others were fine. It's not really possible to accidentally remove a binding if you never go into the config - I'd not even tweaked my bindings for the Exploration changes at the time, as I'd been away from the game for a while.

To clarify: I bought a new PC and set up the keys. Then the update came and wiped them all. I use a mouse and keyboard, it must be a nightmare for hotas users. Honestly it'll take a couple of hours play to tweak everything back how I like it again and frankly it stops me from getting back into ED. This problem has been around since forever. There's been a million threads. Why is it still a thing?

Loaded up after a few months of not playing. Keybindings have all disappeared. Can't be bothered doing them all again for the 4th or 5th time. Maybe see you again in another few months
What I did few years ago is I copied bindings file to my archives and when something gets messed up I'd just insert this file back into the game folder. I believe you can find it here C:\users\[USER]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\EliteDangerous\Options\Bindings . It was also discussed here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/where-is-the-custom-keybinding-file.318028/

Go and look at your bindings files in the directory on your pc. The version you want to use is probably still there if you open the files and check, it likely just isn't getting loaded because something else (a usb) on your pc changed.

And once they are set up again, just save the file somewhere. Put it on your desktop, wherever.

I've had an idea! Someone needs to come up with some way of saving the files on a remote server somewhere - crazy I know!
