Things we wanted, but did not get with Odyssey

For what we currently know about ED: O the list could be 45 pages of random tat dragged from a deranged imagination...
Of course, what the thread does do is enable yet more bleating about stuff never in the game whilst pretending that the OP knows everything that is in Odyssey..

And the console players to air their discontent once again too, I suppose.

Sorry, didn't realise that everyone is supposed to be positive and happy about Odyssey, when what is promised is just SO underwhelming to a large number of people.

And still no fully working console version... with or without Odyssey.

i agree with you that not everybody should be happy with what Odyssey is offering and it would be nice to have a console and next gen console version but people are greedy and always complain more no matter what you offer them. You can't please everyone.Let's see how it looks and plays when it's finally released and we can make our complains later. As far as console version i am certain that console players will want a more polished version , so "mistakes" , bugs and problems with be already known by PC version.

-Terrain overhangs and caves (confirmed not in expansion)
-Weather (seems unlikely from the info we have)
-Ship interiors (confirmed not in expansion)
-EVA possibilities (seems unlikely from the info we have)
-NPC crewmates (confirmed not in expansion)
Shocked caves and overhangs aren't yet in it, so still just a height map with better rock system, tho the crashed mothership shows they could at least do hand placed cave systems; and yea, missing ship interiors, NPC crew and EVA make this huge update feel very half <redacted> at best. Not really sure how first person shooter was considered more important than, y'know, space simmy type updates... Weather was probably being a bit hopeful since that, lava, water etc requires fluid dynamics for it to look next gen (personally I'd have been happy with NMS type oceans for now), tho' they could do cloud formations and dust storms.
i have a question for all of you.Isn't odyssey going to be delivered in packs? So how can you predict before it's even released?
One and done deal, players didn't like the peicemeal of Horizons. Expect the next paid DLC two years after this one drops (guess not fact).

You're right we should wait and see. Maybe Frontier will pull a rabbit out of the hat for the first time ever. You never know.

But if all this is supposed to generate excitement and hype - consider me thoroughly nonplussed and uninterested. We know more about what Odyssey isn't, than what it is (and what it is, appears to be yet another 3rd rate FPS space shooter).

When it's finally released on consoles, it will be for consoles that have been obsolete for a full year. You can't even buy them new. That's unforgivable in my book. 🤷‍♀️

VR Support for on foot.

And re: third person, I don't know why it's so contentious. First of all it will probably be played inside structures (planetary bases, stations) so you won't peek through walls anyway. Secondly it seems like a bolt on pew pew with the same netcode as ships, so you will have more pressing problems to deal with than camera perspective. And seeing engineering powercreep on ships expect a number / bullet sponge fights making tactics secondary.

Also I said it once and I will say it again, IMHO they will pull a huge one on many of you expecting PvP mayhem. It will be PvE with PvP on foot only in selected areas, like Crucible in Destiny 2. I wouldn't mind btw. 😂

So do you know all that is the DLC (even though you, obviously will have to wait for another 6 months to have a version that doesn't natively support hardware that we have been told it wouldn't support) to be able to say accurately what is or is not included in total?

Odd, that the current version of ED works on my PS4 (even if the PC version, completely understandably, in my case looks considerably better) but maybe I've not got the 'right' version of the console for it not to work 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately for the PS5 and new gen Xbox owners, it was mentioned that 'native' support wasn't currently planned, but doesn't stop all of the posturing by (in particular PS5) the owners of these 'new' boxes.

You can be as negative over Odyssey as you wish, please don't let me spoil your misery, but how large is a large number of people in comparison to say, the entire player base, and where would that information be sourced?

Re-read that three times and I'm still none the wiser. 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, I've said all I intend to on this. Far be it from me to get in the way of your (increasingly strawman) white knighting.

I'll just leave this here as an example.

Absolutely... I wonder how many more PS4 games will be throwing up errors on the PS5 in the future... Did Sony promise 100% backwards compatibility?
Didn't you mention at some point in the recent past that you don't own a PS5 anyway?

I love it when folk get to accuse another of 'straw man & white knight' as it serves to illustrate that the point being made isn't able to be countered so insults will have to suffice :ROFLMAO:

I think it’s a safer bet to say that a significant portion of the player base would want improvements to the mechanics they currently engage with in the game.

Bounty Hunting, Piracy, Smuggling, and Trading come to mind. In game tools/screens would go a long way for bounty hunting and trading. Preset dynamic interaction options for piracy would greatly improve the experience. Smuggling needs a rethink from the ground up.

Nope. They said "most games will work", and left it up to the developers to sort it out. Microsoft promised compatibility, and also take steps themselves to ensure it. Sony don't. So it's entirely up to Frontier. 🤷‍♀️

I don't, but I completely fail to see how that's relevant to this discussion. Others do, and will, and I will hopefully at some point this year too. I'm talking about the future of the game, not my personal circumstances.

By the time Odyssey is released on Playstation and Xbox, you will not be able to buy the consoles it is targeted at because they're not manufactured any more. That's unforgivable. Defending it is 100% a strawman.

I'm not intending to insult you - so if you took what I said as an insult, I apologise. I just call it as I see it.

First I've heard of that. From what I can gather, it's all coming out in one update. Sure they maybe stuff coming after that, but we have no idea what that is.

I want to believe that they look at it as a platform expansion and finally start to work on fleshing out the placeholders... But who am I kidding.
In the old debates about legs vs atmospheres I've always said tht its better to add legs first, then they can keep tacking on new activities for the CMDR rather than the spaceship to do, and can keep us busy and happy with a relatively easy to code in stream of new content/activities while the majority of the development resources goes towards atmospheres/weather/flora/fauna. So in essence I also see legs from Odyssey as being an extension to the platform that gives the developers scope to build on.

To a lesser extent, the tenuous atmospheres from Odyssey could also be seen as a platform from which could be iteratively developed to build more complex environments:
  • From the tenuous and still planets we have now to tenuous atmospheres but with wind + dust storms like mars has
    • Cyclones / Huricanes / Dust Devils would need adding if they weren't already incorporated into the wind mechanics
    • Apply the swirling dust/wind mechanics to ice worlds and you've got snow storms like Hoth from the empire strikes back
  • The journey from that point to earth-likes is, however, far more complex, you'd need start to add a model for the water cycle to the engine
    • puddle --> evaporation --> cloud --> precipitation --> puddle
    • Fog - from evaporation or condensation could be rendered using the moody mists already in game
      • fog mist can be seen at locations like guardian structures and some canyons like pomeche 2c
    • clouds could now feature on semi-arid and icy worlds skies
  • Apply the water cycle to certain planet types, but not to water on ELW's, the first liquids would be ones like methane and or ammonia.
    • Why methane? Because that would then let you model Titan.
      • Titan is the only other planet we know of with a "water cycle" like weather system
    • Why ammonia? Because that opens up all those thousands of ammonia worlds that are already in game.
  • Once a water cycle weather mechanic has been added to the game, it could also be used to make some planets from arid to semi arid
    • featuring the odd little lake hear of there, but not full-on oceans and rivers as that much water would necessitate more biology
    • the rain on semi-arid worlds would generally rapidly get absorbed into the porous rocks / sands
    • raindrops could also be modelled as solid pellets to emulate/approximate hail
  • The basic water cycle could be further developed to have snow added to the cycle in colder temperatures.
    • With snow at the more extreme latitudes and or altitudes, even those baren ammonia or Titan-like worlds would be pretty, but very alien.
    • With snow now in the repertoire, ice worlds could get another buff with new weather states
      • calm winds gentle / heavy snow
      • high windspeeds gentle / heavy snow approaching blizzard conditions
  • Lightning, possibly borrowed from Lagrange clouds, could be added to stormy conditions in all environments types.
  • A combination of Lightning + Clouds + Wind / Whirlwind mechanics could now model gas giant upper atmospheres.
  • Lava worlds? Totally different kettle of fish and would need developed in isolation from other planet types outlined above
  • Tidally locked planets would also need separate and special consideration
It's also got to be noted that Jurassic World Evolution and Zoo Planet both have weather & volumetric liquid mechanics in their development of the COBRA engine that could be leaned upon for weather / environments in Elite, and those games contributions could drastically reduce the duration of development of such weather and environmental systmems.

An iterative approach like the one l outlined above would get us towards ELW weather / climate, although this only maps the environment and weather systems of ever- increasingly complex environments, culminating in a toolset that could create a weather system, and environment for an earthlike world, however that plan above does nothing to develop the ocupants of those environments, the Flaura and fauna. The various lifeforms would be completely separate branch of development, and given how weak my biosciences are I'm not going to pontificate on the matter, other than to say it would need to be developed in parallel to weather, and as planets with certain atmospheric conditions were added to the game by the environment team, the lifeform developers could populate those environments with their plants and animals, and things inbetween like corals and tubeworms.

However, I've got to say, that with only Drive / Fly + Scan / Shoot / Scoop, all those environments would be boring, especially if it was say 9 months, and all we go was "look on top of your blue sky, we've added clouds, YAY Clouds! And maybe before years end, we might add rain drops!", but having legs gives the developer a whole new platform to plug in activities to keep us busy with while ecosystems and weather are developed.

Advance the core gameplay? eg: Mechanics to allow a career based in smuggling and piracy, with some actual depth and engagement?

Or we could see the biggest development effort yet thrown at ED to try and make a FPS bolt on, that risks being a Multicrew 2.0 to a segment of the player base.
