Things you will never understand about how others equip their ships.

I saw somebody the other day in a CZ with just mines and torpedoes. That had me scratching my head...

Lol, I'll admit I've done that, in a wing with other cmdrs, I'll just have a T-10 chocked full of reverb cascades, dropping shields on the large targets, smaller ships move in to finish them off. Again not much point to it, but it does work. Also occasionally, when I want my SLF pilot to rank up, I'll drop shields, she does the rest.

I don't remember the exact ship he was flying, but it wasn't big. I think it was an alliance ship, so his torpedo loadout would have been minimal.

Likely part of a ganker wing?

Speaking of noobs, here's a noob question - can I see the engineering a ship is using by looking at its sub-target list?

I don't think so. He was a lower-ranked player in a CZ. I'm guessing he was a noob who hasn't discovered just how useless these weapons are.

Make Mines & Torpedoes Great Again!
Don't underestimate low ranked players - last week a Mostly Harmless guy in a Chieftan gave me a run for my money, his ToT was far greater than mine, and I wasn't flying a Titanic of a ship either (think I was in my Courier, or Vulture). Very much doubt that was a genuine noob. At least I would like to think that I'm not that bad a pilot!

Although yes, sometimes I chuckle at the outfitting mix on some player ships - but in fairness I've probably done similar silly things when I started out. You try things out and hopefully learn from your experience... as opposed to just skip that by consuming online guides instead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not mocking the player. If anything, I'm mocking Frontier for making useless weapons. Believe me, I WANT torpedoes that are deadly and cloaked mines (which all mines IRL are) with a large AOE or micro-thrusters (like mines in Homeworld). I have a Dropship equipped with mines that I use for bombing settlements, just because dropping bombs is fun :)

My Alt account is mostly harmless in Combat, I never judge a cmdr by his combat rank. I have logs of wrecking an Elite Python cmdr, in my freighter config T9.

Regarding torps, they are deadly, if used correctly with a sufficient arming distance. Against NPC's, you could throw rocks at them, so it doesn't even matter,

Well we all know you're a noob, so.....

(just kidding)

I have regressed to noob level tbh, haven't done any decent combat in over 6 months. Btw do you still drive Subs? Or was that a past career? I was reading about some nuke torps that was in use on certain subs during the cold war.

At the end of the day, a mining ship is still a freighter in this game.
Not really...if you're trading, why carry modules you'd never use that are just lowering your cargo space and thus reducing your profit per run?
Most people that haven't just started the game would probably have two ships...a mining equipped ship and a trade ship, the build and engineering are very different.

I still don't understand why people waste a slot with a docking computer :D
In the '84 elite, wiping out on the letter box of a station was quite common, so a DC was a very handy module once you earned it...but in ED...you're just wasting a slot imo. Each to their own I suppose :D

That was a LONG time ago. These days I drive a cloaked Dolphin, wishing that I had the torpedoes (space equivalent) that we had on my submarine. But as I said in another thread, I'm in top 50% of CG using that stealth Dolphin, which I've yet to lose in combat, whereas the one time I flew my fancy battle Mamba, I bought an 8 mil rebuy. I guess once a submariner, always a submariner! ;)
