Thinking of getting a rift - some questions

Hi all im thinking of getting a rift. I currently have an ATI 7970 ghz eddition Along with an intel i7 3820 and 12g of ram running st 1800. I can currently run ED at 140 ish fps all max quality etc.

Will i be able to run the rift at adecent fps?
What teeaks/settings should i consider?

I wont have the cash to get the rift and a new gfx card.

Well, I've got a ATI Sapphire 7870 2ghz OC and a AMD FX-6300 and it runs the rift pretty smoothly, get a bit of judder here and there but nothing too bad.

You want to vsync @ 75 and adjust graphics detail until you hit that in space.

i was upset that my 970 and 5820k was getting rare judder on med-high settings
but after some overclocking and tweaking it was pretty smooth with good gfx. That being said there is some crazy tweaks available in terms of supersampling and turning Oculus image quality in the options.
Some say its the best config.

i havent tried it yet, but its sooo good on the rift that I sent back my 970 for a 980 with recent price drops. I expect the extra power and potential overclock to help a lot. Not to mention the potential future proof of sli 980s to crush whatever the CV is.

id say its worth it for you to try but dont expect perfection, with the titanX out now the 980s, 970s are going down in price big time. even a 960 would do you some good and they are cheap cheap!

I'm running with a R9 280x, which I think is the same as a 7970? Core i7 2600k @4.2GHz. You will likely need to turn ALL graphics settings to off/low. But even with that, you will still be blown away at how amazing the game looks. You will probably get some judder in RES, but I find it quite playable. (After you Rift, you'll never want to go back.)

All that said, I'm seriously considering changing to a GTX 970, or maybe a 980.
(...or maybe a Titan X?? If only it had the FP64 for compute...)

honestly, if you guys are in UK or USA the CAD dollar is so bloody low right now you could have a gtx 970 for like $250 USD or maybe 200 pound...
im seeing this trend used:

gtx 970 300-350$ CAD
gtx 980 500-600$ CAD

used but only months old, everyone is looking to trade up for titan...
which is a 999$ card haha!

im heading to sli 980s just ED and the eventual oculus consumer....mmm 1440p
bye bye screen door

I run a 7970 all on high only occasional problems in RES and lux stations.

With a DK2??
It amazes me how often is seems that people get wildly different performance out of roughly the same hardware. That shouldn't be the case. Happens for GTX users as well. Seems like we're missing something...

on my 970, I get close to 190fps out in space, and something like 120+ (if memory serves) in stations, on maxed out ultra settings on my 1080 monitor. In the rift, I have to run the game on low. It's fine at higher settings in space, but in space stations, even medium with AA and low shadows, It's too juddery. You will be amazed at how much GPU power you need to run this game in an oculus. Doesn't matter though. Playing this game in the rift on low BLOWS THE DOORS off playing the game on ultra on a monitor.

x1000

just now received the zotac omega amp 980!
am so stoked to run ED dk2 with this. omg omg omg
the 970 showed me wonders i had never seen, but the 980 after i overclock should yield +300clock/+500mem over the 970!

on that note, anyone with a 970 should OC the hell out of it. you can easily get 200 mhz on the clock and 200mhz on the memory. it actually gave be 1-2 fps for the dk2 to play with, which = less judder

Yep, I have been using core +155MHz and memory +214MHz overclock on my Asus GTX 970 Mini. I haven't tried higher core overclock, but with higher memory clocks it seemed that the judder increased instead of decreased, so those are my current settings. I get no GPU-related judder problems with these settings.

i think your core has room to breath. the avera 970 overclock is +200 or so.
your memory speed is about as good as it gets. no need to introduce more judder by going higher and making it less stable.

but that clock has room for sure. then again 155-200 would you see a difference??? prob not...
