Third person mode

Can the turret gunner crewman fly a fighter?

Yes, but only i 1st person...

The only 3rd person mode that have some UI is the Gunner role, and that mode cannot fly the ship... so even if you had two CMDRs and multicrew these, one CMDR would have to fly the ship in 1st person view, and then the Gunner role can shoot things in 3rd person and use some other tools...

They can swap to one if there's a spare fighter. The hosting commander always flies the ship but the combinations you can have I think are;-

1. 1 pilot, 1 Gunner.
2. 1 pilot, 1 player fighter pilot.
3. 1 pilot, 1 Gunner , 1 NPC pilot
4. 1 pilot, 1 Gunner , 1 player fighter pilot
5. 1 pilot, 2 player fighter pilots
6. 1 pilot, 1 Gunnar, 1 player pilot.
7 1 pilot, 1 Gunnar, 1 player pilot, 1 NPC pilot (Not sure about this one, Never tried it).

3rd person mode is dumb. Do you run around in life watching yourself and everything through a floating camera above and behind your head? Lol
Ah the modern generation "Living life through a selfie-stick"....
(Blame games like Tomb Raider, all those years ago, for starting an awful trend!)

Now that's not fair, in certain games 3rd person view works very well, say Mass Effect, Tomb Raider, even NMS. However, they're all ground based games (sorry NMS but your flight model is horrible). It's just for space games I think 1st person is best. Compare Space battles in SW:Battle Front 2 and SW:Squadrons, Privateer 2 and Freelancer (urgh).

Mind you, I've been playing NMS in VR lately and that was amazing. I hope they continue to work on Odyssey to bring the full VR experience.

I have all of the Tomb Raider games released on PC (and the Uncharted series on PS4) so am very tongue-in-cheek (but still dislike the Out-of-Body view)... Many of the early RPG games would present a top-down or 3rd person view too, which always had me wanting 1st person in preference.

NMS I've avoided 3rd person, and up until recently VR as it was poorly optimised, but do agree its flight model doesn't compare to ED (although it isn't entirely dreadful for an arcade game)

Never played any of the SW games, but I'll take your word for it!

Fingers crossed on an eventual full implementation of VR in Odyssey.

OK, OK I admit. Tomb Raider needed 3rd person view. But only due to its game mechanics though.
And I'm only being nice about it because I loved her games. 😄
