this game is hard

The beauty about ED that I like is that it doesn't put you into a position where you have to compete against everyone else to stay relevant.

It doesn't tell you what to do and is incredibly self motivated. This game is a marathon, not a sprint, so do what you want at your own pace

So... with Elite: Dangerous you have to be hardcore enough to learn the ropes, but it doesn't demand you hang around all the time.

I would say the game is good. But the community makes it great! First game i regulary read the forums. The combinaton of great community and good game make this experience just the best :D

i quite like this game lol, because sometimes its hard to gain money and make your way in the galaxy.

Me thought that since everything was toned for the multiplayer side of the game, it would be easy to make your ways , but not really.

doing things take time, and even doing trade runs, i dont make much profit per runs.

its quite nice.

yeah, a addict player that plays like 60 hours per week probably can grind very high quite fast, but its still realistic .

In my opinion game is too easy. Money and progress earning is too fast.
It is not 60 hours game like other on on market. This is game for years.

That's a bit unfortunate Commander Jaeger

It is unfortunate, grinding out hundreds of millions to buy and upgrade a new hull is a significant time investment. Ennui sets in pretty easily.

So the only meaningful reward structure at the moment is community goal bonuses. After putting in the minimum effort to reach the 40% or 70% goals the global bonus saves me x number of hours of that ennui.

If you are not into virtual exploration of the galaxy simulation, or get your jollies from the limited PvP offering there is nothing to do but grind. Some people simply delete their save because there is no endgame, that's probably the most damming statement a player can make about the lack of game in the game.

This is slog for years.

Fixed that for you

Heh, what you call grinding was the gameplay that made Elite '84 a classic. We didn't call it grinding then. Just playing.

Then 30 years passed and we saw an explosion of sophistication in computing.

If you find it a grind you might be doing it wrong, try switching to a less powerful ship and mastering it in combat (viper's good for that). "There is no endgame" is an advertising slogan that would definitely work on me, sandbox games are my thing that's why I backed the game.

People reset their save's for the challenge not out of desperation, give it a bash go bankrupt on purpose (to keep your ratings) and see if you get your mojo back.

The game is indeed aimed at a mature and hardocre audiance , but... the combat AI is.... weak... you can take on the best AI ships with your starter ship , hope that changes

I think the difficulty is fine. It is meant to be a game to enjoy too.
If you feel it is too easy to kill an Elite NPC Anaconda in your Sidewinder, go for PvP.
No offence, but it is nice to see that the game can be fun for everyone. Casual gamers blasting weak NPCs and hardcore ones can always try their luck on PvP.

there is hardly any pvp in elite though. on 10.000 npc there comes 1 cmdr...

This game is hard

"We choose to play Elite in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win ..."

The game has no end to work for but one you set for yourself. What I enjoy there is no constant upgrading or you fall behind like in a traditional MMO. There it is chasing the next upgrade. Win the events to get to the raid. Win that to get to the next raid, win that and eventually fight the boss mob, and get the best gear, just for a year then do it all over again as the gear is not good enough anymore. You need to chase the upgrade circle over and over again. No matter how top end you are, the next expansion means your lacking.
.
Now we have elite all over again and that vicious circle is broken if you want it to be. There is no rush to a anaconda there is no need for a python, there is no need for anything but a sidewinder free to all. I saw a video of someone on the boards who took a sidewinder 1000's of light years out. You don't need the best gear, it is all up to you and your skill to progress to whatever goal you set.
.
Such a nice change, and I am enjoying my Asp, 25+ million banked and wondering if I want a T7 as my asp works well in combat so don't want a vulture yet. Still deciding and that is the brilliance of the game, no set course, no set objectives. Set your own and play when you want for as long as you want and never fall behind. You can't as it is only you against it all.

There is always the Community Goals to hang around, better yet hang around starter systems to protect newcomers from griefers or around Lave and Diso to show those CODE guys how it's done.
But yes, no much PvP happens just by accident. I don't expect many encounters myself 7000Ly from mankind ;)

Hey, it's really refreshing to see "this game is hard.. [...] it's quite nice", makes a real change. BTW, trade profits are low at the start, as you get bigger ships that can earn more, to finance your adventures.. it gets easier.

Glad you're enjoying it, fly safe :D

I think I'm an average gamer. Enough time to be meaningful, good enough that I don't suck. If I get interdicted by a player I can usually kill him or make my escape unless I'm up against a wing or I'm very outclassed. Smart enough to trade and make money, patient enough to explore, though I refuse to do the Sag A* run or farm the neutrons fields.

And six months after launch I'm in a python, I'm a Lord in the Empire, though mainly that's because I have that stupid 'can't get past the summerlands bug', friendly with the Feds. I have some rep, discovered a lot of stars and planets.

Yes, this game is hard, you can't get to the endgame in a couple of weeks. And really there is no endgame. Unless you fly without insurance.

Started a month and a half ago. Im in a trade anaconda, a fully outfitted fer de lance and I have a stock python, asp, and vulture in dry dock. I play maybe 30 hours a week, sometimes 40. My rankings in rep for fed/empire are 4/4 (low). My point is that if you want money its not hard to get. Just go about things smartly. RES hunt till you can pick up a type 9 then do bulk runs. Sometimes I wonder how some players with double my play time have so little credits. Well I do know, they are doing things to not make them (rare runs, warzones, exploration).

Best advice i can give the OP is to not do trade runs (no rare runs) until you are in a type 7 MINIMUM, I waited for the type 9 because i was pulling 2.5 mil hour avg at RES which is equal to bulk trading in a type 7, but alot more fun.
Rare trading is not a good credit/hour outcome.

Done that, (didn't like the Viper the shields are pants. Still have the Cobra, but the Vulture is a vast improvement) bought the t-shirt...

Me too, but in this case it translates into "Grindathon".

People reset their save's for the challenge not out of desperation

So we agree there is no challenge, but in my definition they reset their saves out of desperation due to wanting to have something to do .. .

give it a bash go bankrupt on purpose (to keep your ratings) and see if you get your mojo back.

No thanks, I don't need something to kill time, and if I had any doubt ever the resets after beta were enough to learn I hate being reset.

Let's see if the mission overhaul in 'Power Play' giving the devs the ability to inject content will make any difference.

Hey, it's really refreshing to see "this game is hard.. [...] it's quite nice"

If only it were actually challenging type of hard and not hard to not be bored to tears by grinding kind of hard. That would be nice.

Much better to grind combat money in the early days until you can haul more than 100 tons at a time. Get a Viper and a KW scanner and you'll have enough for a trading Asp in no time.

Exactly. Back in the 80s the game was great because in the context of games at that time, the limitations of hardware and memory, well, it was novel and the best it could be. This is the 2000's and grinding, studying a manual, playing the tutorials for a few hours just to skill up, etc. is so out of place. The jerks here want to be insulting and call it "hand holding". I just call it "nostalgia" and selective memory. Rose-tinted glasses if you will.

Having said that, the game is fun once you skill up. But it gets old fast and then I take it in small doses as the mood strikes me.
