This game is not friendly to newcomers?

Yeah tell me about it!

Tutorials are a total waste of energy & resources; I haven't even peaked at one of them & I've picked this game up just fine with T&E plus the help of the forums & YT.
OMG "peeked" - must be the onset of dementia.

33 is about average, right?

Think of it like learning to swim- they throw you in the deep end, now swim!
Seriously that is what it is like, was for me anyway. You can watch many YT videos but most are out of date from a version that no longer applies so they are not very helpful really but are a little. But that is where the forum comes in as a great help.

I bought it on steam today, and so far - I have 0 clues of what I can do. I get 0 information on where I can go to do stuff. I see something called Mawson dock, which description says it's for new pilots, so I figure maybe that's where I start. I die once on my way there due to overheated ship and it exploded with no information why or how to prevent it. At least nothing a new player can understand. I respawn like millions of kilometres away again at something called the detention centre or something. Now I got to Mawson dock, but when I try to enter it I get warnings for trespassing, even though it says I have access. I read somewhere that you have to go fast and not too slow, and I was pretty slow so that would make sense. It also said you can't get fined for trespassing... But nooo.
I got fined like 20 times, 200C each, and I still couldn't dock. It's too late for me to refund, but this game is so weird. How am I supposed to do ANYTHING in this game if it tells me nothing and throws me in with 100 different mechanics and problems that I have 0 knowledge of preventing? A very poorly made game, or so it seems.
Welcome to the black!
Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it. Brutally steep learning curve and all. Elite is a space sim, so there is a lot to learn and after that there is still a lot to learn, but it will make you feel like a pro...

Fly safe. o7

Go to solo. Do the tutorials. Park and look at every tab and sub tab. Try every option.
Don't know? Be pleasant, ask anyone, any forum.
There seems to be an equal amount of loons and sane players here.
Hahahahahahahaha

As mentioned above, it's a steep learning curve but do the tutorials, join a group, head on over to the Galactic Academy and ask questions.

Things are afoot however to make the new players introduction to the game easier. ;)

It's best to play the tutorial. Get some practice in the starter areas. The game has no goal and progression comes with unlocking ranked ships, gaining influence and of course credits and engineering.

Never has been friendly to newcomers, from launch. It's more newcomer friendly now, compared to then

Sorry @Scareth, hang in there. Once you get the basics down its a great game. In fact some of the things that now seem difficult become second nature and you'll start looking for things to do. Definitely do the training sessions first and YouTube has a video for just about every aspect of the game. :)

Welcome to the ED community BTW.
