This game is rated 6/10 on steam

There's probably been a thread about this before, but there you go. Do you think that's a fair score? I'd say it's just about right. Technically impressive, good flight model, but ultimately pretty empty.

It's fair for a game like this. It isn't for everyone.

I remember a friend once asking me if it was a good game and my answer was "Yes but you have to really really like space stuff"

I might be an outlier, but I've never given credence to critics.
And Steam? Ha, I beta tested it back whenever, and 14 years later it's full of teens like my son, whose opinion I wouldn't give any weight to, as his experiences are limited, and likes very out of line from what I want.

I'd say it's a bit unfair. OTH, I don't really care. People buy games without researching them which results in disappointment and low ratings.

I guess, I mean this game has more substantial content than X-rebirth however in XR the content is stable and does not change and therefore is not subject to being broken, meaning if I want to log on and do A I can, In elite I was recently annoyed by the latest patch because I wanted to play elite and do a,b and c and all 3 have been broken. But then this is not a single player game, which I find sad.

However it is worth noting that many space sim games start off with awful rep due to the financial restraints of our world ideology being a corporate government. Space sims get published too early, get very bad reviews and recover slowly, over time.

It's not fair for the teams behind visuals and sound.

It is fair for some features in their current form, however most of them could easily be much higher with some attention to detail.

It too high a score for those who are supposed to direct effort into providing the aforementioned detail, who undermine the value of all the teams related with the above due to being short sighted.

This, Elite Dangerous is not your Fallout or your battlefield game, it doesn't quite fall into the 'popular with your average gamer' category.

Yet a LOT of such gamers buy it for something it most certainly is not and then get profoundly unhappy with their purchase.

I did make a comparison some time ago with Euro Truck Simulator 2, which has great reviews on Steam, yet most certainly is not a game for everybody. My conclusion was that ETS2 simply managed to sell itself to the actual target audience, so they were perfectly happy with it. ED manages to sell itself, often, to people so way outside its target audience that seemingly at least 25% of the people that are unhappy with it were never meant to enjoy such a game in the first place. Wrong marketing, trailers that leave the wrong impression, no idea...

Couldn't give a flying frazoo.

All I wanted was a modern version of the original '84 from my days on the BBC. Got that with the first release of ED. Fine, there have been some additions from that - planetary landings and so on - but really I just wanted the basic game - trading and shooting. (Although I do admit to getting the exploration bug which was never part of the original)
Also glad the thargoids are back - hoping for random interdictions in witch space from them whilst trading at some point in the future, just like before.

Pretty much what I feel. But I'd like new features too, which is why I'm a little saddened by this.

I'd say it's not surprising. The Rating had alot of time to develop.

A Galaxy-sized playground originally advertised as a huge Sandbox and "Blaze your own Trail"...
...but only a mere handful or two of things to do in it and definitely not a Sandbox. Far from it.
"Play the way you want*" ... "* but Frontier Developments(tm) reserves to retain the right to deny, override, modify and/or control anything at anytime".

Kinda leads to high expectations, followed by a harsh awakening, doesn't it?

Highly visible Scripts, Assets visibly spawned out of thin air (or space dust) to no end, fake Economy and mechanical/digital Mechanics with minimal variations to "more of the same".
Latter hitting Stellar Forge the hardest. Seen a few hundred Systems, basically seen them all.

MMO? Balancing? Long-standing Bugs or sub-par Design Decisions? Shallow Gameplay? CQC? MultiPew? Crime&Punishment? Communication (lack thereof) from FDev to even its most loyal customers? I just stop here.
The list if issues, toxic design/management decisions, bugs and poor Gameplay design is long. Very long. Too long.

I don't say a 6/10 is "fair", "right on" or "wrong".
I only say : it's not surprising.

This is the problem for me. It hasn't evolved at all. The only evolution that's worth while I've seen is the engineers. planetary landings are cool, but I was doing that in the 90's on my Amiga. I have the ships I want but nothing to do with them. Done just about everything that's worth doing and I haven't logged on since March

Naw, it's not a fair rating, because Elite doesn't try to cater to everybody, it unashamedly is a geekfest. Steam is just a huge popularity contest, so to be honest, I'm impressed it's got 6, I'd say under the circumstances, that speaks volumes about how good the game is that it's retaining a good percentage of people who perhaps aren't the usual demographic.

I only use Steam for games my friends play. Not including Elite. Well, that's not exactly true. I initially purchased Elite PC on Steam, but moved onto the native launcher the day Horizons launched.

I appreciate Steam for what it is... But I ignore its community completely.

+ Rep

Game ratings are meaningless & aren't worth the ink & paper they're printed on. Most written by fanboys of how THEY think the games industry should be. Thankfully their opinions differ greatly from mine.

I still say ED is value for money & still happy to play after nearly 3 years.
