This has to be a bug, can’t upgrade FSD 3, 4, 5 increased range

This CANT be intended, I unlocked Farseer and dump a lot of exploration data which puts me up to level 5 with her right away great! then went and gathered almost all materials great!
I dock at a station and I see remote engineer? What is this? So I find I can do the first two levels right there no need to go all the way back to Farseer, awesome I get level 1 and two done and get around 4-5 ly increase awesome, I go back out and find the Arsenic and Mangenese and Phosphorous then go back to a remote engineer and no go says I need to gain more Rep with the engineer? .... so I fly back to Farseer thinking I must need to do the upgrades there ... but she will not do them either ? Sooo... I’m thinking well ok that sucks so I guess they want me to upgrade some other things with her first...so I click on Shielded FSD which I have the Matt’s for but then it says WARNING APPLYING THIS MODIFICATION WILL REMOVE ALL PREVIOUS MODIFICATIONS!!??

Please tell me this is a bug?

You will have to modify other modules with Felicity to increase your REP with her: thrusters, power plant, sensors, detailed surface scanner (if fitted), shield boosters (if fitted) and FSD Interdictor (if fitted). Whatever you have installed, modify it and your REP with Felicity will increase. This goes also for all the other Engineers. o7

That is correct. If you apply Shielded, you will lose the Range. You get one kind of modification per component.

But do not despair - there is a simple solution:

Store your FSD at Felicity's place. They'll give you a junk loaner. Modify it until you have all the rep you need, then put yours back, scrap the loaner. Modify yours until you're happy.

Or, as above, modify other things there to build rep as well.

Wow well, I am a new player and this is my first experience with what I see other players complaining about, I would probably not feel bad if it was explained up front but a new player doing this for the first time is not expecting to hit a wall when they cone back after running all around collecting stuff expecting to get the upgrade that was presented as “ bring me this and this” and I will give you this, it’s a bait and switch ... very disappointing.

Ehh. It is a game after all. This is not an unusual or original concept in games. Gain a new ability, level up that new ability.

I don't disagree, it wouldn't hurt if it were a bit more clear - a little "The more you do this, the better I can do that" sort of thing.

Ok after looking at the other modifications I see I may have over reacted a bit, does not look that bad hopefully I don’t have to upgrade the entire ship before I can finish my FSD...

BTW WHICH upgrades are worth it?
If you can only do one in each tree I bet there is a consensus on which ones are best to choose ?

FSD for range, I do dirty drives for thrusters, life support for less mass, but in the end it depends on what you are going to use the ship for, combat may be best with different mods, so there's no one best mod to own them all.

Search and search, read and read the forums. There is a wealth of knowledge here. I've played the game since week one and I am still a newbie in some areas.
OK Maybe all areas. :) The last time I sent a private message asking for help was yesterday.

Ok well now I’m burned out again I upgraded my surface scanners, my engines, my power plant and my sensor and Farseer STILL will not upgrade my FSD increased range past level 2, I’m not sure I’m interested in finding out just how many OTHER ships Frontier expects me to lug over here and upgrad before I can finish the FSD in this one lol .,.

Apologies, please define *will not.*

Level 2 is nearly maxed out and Level 3 won't unlock?

Level 3 is unlocked, you check the top-right to make sure you have enough mats, but it doesn't let you?

What level is your rep with the Engineer? You can see this in the middle of the screen after you hit Starport Services.

What ship, and what is your FSD and Power Plant?

Loptt, I had a issue with a pinned blueprint from a different Engineer.

It would only let me modify grade 5 multicannons remotely.
But not 1-4. So it was basically pointless pinning it. Lol

I think pinned blueprints are bugged, but I haven't been able to reproduce it.

Best bet is fly back to Farseer Inc and apply the mods, and maybe repin the blueprint.

Blueprints were working fine in 3.3.01.

Level 1 and 2 of FSD increased range are complete
Level 3 appears to be locked behind another requirement which was not made clear at the start, in that I think you now must upgrade an as of yet specified “other” amount of things before you can finish what you started.

I am in a Krait MK II using a 5a FSD

I will look for that “rep level” you mentioned I was looking for something like that but I must have missed it.

The trick with engineering is _not_ to go from 0 to 5 within a few days or even a week. It's a process and you are not expected to go all the way to G5 and do nothing but gathering materials!
Just be satisfied with what you get, gather a few materials perhaps and do whatever you want. You never need any G5 mod for anything. So your range is a few light years under the maximum? So what? Enjoy the game, do things you like, gather a few materials on the way perhaps, come back later. :)

I got 4 or 5 FSDs at G5 and many other mods as well, and I never grinded anything in Elite. At some point you'll just have what you need if you collect stuff on the way. Patience.

I'm not sure if you've hit a bug or you may have done things in the wrong order.

What I normally do when unlocking an Engineer and wanting to do an upgrade, let's say Farseer and the FSD, is to first do all of the FSD upgrades with Farseer up to level 5, and then I can use the pinned blueprint up to level 5 remotely.

Also remember you cannot apply an experimental effect remotely, you have to get the engineer to do that.

What I would do in your situation, is to remove the modification on the FSD, and then apply all the upgrades again at Farseer. Whilst it sucks that you will have wasted your time and materials, that might be the only way and you will have to treat this as a learning experience.

Thats the spirit. Play the game and have fun. Forced optimization is nothing but grind and not much fun.

What Valorin said! If you try and do engineering upgrades in a short space of time you won't enjoy it but if you do it over time it can become fun.

The way I play Elite is to swap between different activities. I fire up Elite and think to myself, what do I feel like doing today. It might be combat/trading/exploration etc. but sometimes it's just driving round on a surface of a planet or flying round dropping into USS's. Whilst doing that I pick up materials etc. along the way. Most of my materials and data I have maxed out which means if a new ship comes out I can engineer that straight away. No grinding is necessary.

You don't have to play in a rush with Elite, just play at a fun pace and enjoy.

Just to add to all the good advice given already - you can increase your reputation (=engineering rank) with Felicity by selling exploration data at her base.

If you already got Farseer to G5, that is indeed a bug if it said you still needed to gain more rep while doing mods later.

That has nothing to do with needing to start over, if you change the base modification from increased range to shielded.
That would be normal.

My guess. You said remote engineering, so is there a chance you're using the blueprint pinned from another engineer (like Elvira Martuuk, who also modifies FSD) but only got reputation rank 2?

A BIT?!
Are we playing the same game? :p
