This is how escape pods should look like

(B-58 "Hustler" escape capsule)

Seriously need to hug knees in on that or face amputation.

The primary reason for capsule closure was bailout. The capsule snapped shut quickly when the trigger handles were activated by crewmen. Each independently controlled his own capsule. The closure sequence included automatic restraint and positioning of the user. Shoulder straps tightened and pulled the crewmen back. A bar passing laterally under the legs raised the knees and then pulled heels back against the seat pan. An upright fetal position was needed to assure capsule door clearance.

Considering you only get 8 minutes of air when the canopy breaches, I don't really see how helpful ejecting into space with nothing but your chair will be!

But what a ride.
Thinking of which, I bet you dont have to navigate the thing to the nearest space station and dock....

Which means the escape pod has a fully functional system wide autopilot.
Unless of course it just summons aid like the emergency fuel beacon which picks you up.

If the later, it could mean you could be podded easily...
Engage Ramming Speed.....

The drive is smaller even than an RCS thruster, so I don't see that being that useful, especially since it has no fuel tank or hyperdrive :p

You could probably get more speed if you stick an autocannon to the back and fire it though. That's another FA off exploit that PVPers can use!

I think that is meant to be a mini emergency Frame Shift Drive so that you can get back to the last station you docked at. Basically giving an in-game explanation for why you suddenly find yourself back at the station after your ship went BOOM.

I would love if you actually even had to "land" that in a station before getting into a new ship. Maybe you eject, the hyperspace drive engages and jumps you immediately to just outside the station in question (yes...disregarding how these jumps normally puts you close to the star). After that you then have to manually get in to the station by yourself. Might be to much of a time sink though...

I think it makes sense to have a proper escape pod instead of a flying seat. In an escape pod, the payload (in this case the pilot) will not be such a large percentage of the total weight as in a flying seat, allowing you to have more stuff on the pod. Important stuff, like oxygen or decoy launchers. Since the non-escape pod part of the ship is going to explode anyways, there's no economic reason to have a small escape pod, you're better off ejecting together with all parts of the ship that are not going to explode. In the other Elites, your ship had a small cargo compartment measured in kilogrammes for valuable stuff like Palladium. I think this cargo compartment should follow with your ship when ejecting.

Sorry for the slight OT, but that's an interesting concept. Does it actually work in game?

I agree, i case of total break down of your ship. you could get let's say 15 sec to get out of your seat and into a pod and eject.

Well, I was thinking more that your seat and your cockpit already is the escape pod. It doesn't really make sense to have an independent escape pod that is separate from your ship. What does that add, other than a greater risk of ejecting too late?

Without some sort of canopy or shield, that frontier concept art looks plain weird.

I'm no expert on the lore here, but I think there's a "Remlok" thingie that's part of your suit (?) and deploys a survival mask with life support. And your flight suit is an actual space suit.

The whole idea of an escape pod requires major suspension of disbelief, for both the mechanics of how you get to the nearest station, and the brief time it takes. I understand how it's necessary for gameplay reasons but it still feels off to me.

It would be more believable (IMO) if the Cmdr survival was based on something like cloned bodies you kept in storage at the last station you visited. There would be a device in your helmet that constantly mapped your memories, and at the instant of ship death it beamed a FTL data dump to the clone back at the station. That version of you dies with the ship, another version wakes up back at the station. If nothing else, it would give a little more meaning to discussions here when "killing" other players comes up. :)
