Ultimately don't leave yourself afk for hours or if you do (like 777driver) be prepared to take a credit hit sometimes.

Not disagreeing with you, but if it isn't safe to go AFK in the hangar, docked at an allied station, something is screwed up.

.... unless it is a deliberate feature to discourage pad blocking in general and the Wing beacon trading exploit in particular.

I expect that Wing beacons still function over tens of light-seconds so they would still make the slowest part of the journey to a station faster (unless, of course, they don't work in proximity of stations - must look and see).
