You are correct. Just tried it with a sidewinder. Shooting inside the station has a lethal response.
I've also just teleported across the galaxy. I was right next to Leesti. Now I'm in my starting system, LTT 15449 in what I think is my free sidewinder. No idea that was going to happen.
This is what you did wrong. You should have waited to clear the docking port before you opened fire. Pretty bold going for an Elite rated player in a FdL btw

Well I'm aware of the no fire zone, you get a fine for shooting close to the station. No idea inside the station was any different.

I was carrying a full cargo of machinery to Diso, and as I came up the outside of the station to the end with the entrance, I could hear the station shooting at someone.
I stopped and waited safely outside for the station to finish up whatever was going down.
I heard the concussion of a ship exploding. So I throttled up, coming around to to the entrance. Debris were drifting out the mail slot. I wondered what had happened. Apparently I need wonder no more

Last time I did it, I got fined 200cr for just deploying hard points, in the no fire zone.
I once shot the station by mistake, no hardpoints deployed but I touched the joystick trigger and station attacked me at mail slot!
