I told you, the game is doomed!
no doom. it started as a worrying thread and has just now evolved into a steamchart chat. get your act straight!

double psssttt... You mean the trend that even the last dimwit slowly realizes that he can launch ED without the steam launcher?
It feels as if people are using Steam stats as the be-all-end-all argument that "Elite Dangerous is [dieing|dead|abandoned|on the death bed]".
Unfortunately for those folks that are attempting to use Steam's player count as ammo for the above... Steam stats only paint a very small picture of our actual player counts.
Elite Dangerous was not originally released on and locked to the Steam platform in 2014. It was made with our own client patcher, our own accounts system, our own developed systems. Completely split away from Steam. We do not force people to launch the game through Steam. At last check, players can download Elite Dangerous from Steam, and not have the Steam client running at all while playing Elite.![]()
I miss the Reddit users who at least has some talent in analysing Steam stats. These forum users are soooo bad at itWoot Steamchart phase! Always the least useful and interesting of the many available thread phases. Even petty sniping and countersniping is more interesting (and usually also tj's fault).
I used to enjoy when people would use the same charts to justify polar opposite concepts but now it's like trying to mock a song on satellite feed that's playing somewhere you can't change it; eventually you get bored even of that, it occurs so much.
Using SteamCharts data, the annual average Steam concurrent:
2018 is the best year ever :O
- 2018 (Jan-Sep) = 4,721.16
- 2017 = 4,661.09
- 2016 = 3,672.75
- 2015 (Apr-Dec) = 4,491.62
Game is not doomed? [noob]
…
Obviously you are ignoring all the players not using steam who* stopped playing. Noob

insert smilie here that I can't access since the nice smiley selector got removed and is only available via "go advanced"
You don't have data to make such claims. FD has. So I will go with their decisions thank you.
Also they are creators of ED. Game lives or dies by their developers. It seems ED continue to thrive so I suspect they have all capacity to make those decisions you might disapprove of.
I'm going to say it, now and openly eagleboy - I think you are paid member of FDev's staff.
Oh what a surprise. Didn't see that on coming at all.
I'm going to say it, now and openly eagleboy - I think you are paid member of FDev's staff.
I've NEVER seen you openly detract from the game, recently you've started down the "sort of maybe" line, in some attempt to reduce your raging "on your knees" fanboyism but this just takes the cake.
ObAnt - made it quite clear that several guests on the day "made it very hard" and "didn't go easy on them" regarding the 6 hour presentation FDev gave and unless you've not been paying attention HE WAS IN THE ROOM WHEN IT HAPPENED.
So you're going to call him a liar now too eh?
So yeah "data" as you call it to back up the OP's statement is already public knowledge.
It's truly unbeleiveable the efforts you'll go to, to "protect" FDev, to the point of outright lying even in the face of known public knowledge.
I'm done with you.
Steam data chat? I love Steam data chat
Have forum users learned how to read the data yet? Disappointingly, noNevermind...
For the doombringers brokenly misinterpreting Steam stats for Elite's imminent death, I hope they don't re-look look at No Man's Sky's stats following its recent success (I'll make an educated guess in assuming they've brought that game up as a discussion topic a few times), because god damn, a 95% drop in less than 3 months is a bad hit...
"NMS is doomed, they should release more content and features! OMG!" or something.
Hold up, we've heard that before.

Take the original grind for guardian blueprints, which was horrific before FDev dropped the requirements to one blueprint per unlock after a lot of pressure: the fact that they thought that many blueprints was an acceptable number, considering what had to be done to obtain one, showed a big element of why some think FDev don't actually play their game or are always understanding of what engaging gameplay is.
Actually I think you're completely wrong.
A game lives or dies by the playerbase using it.
Anyone in 'commercial' software will tell you; Give the customer what they want, not what you think they want. And that's a very important lesson to learn.
ED does not continue to thrive! Do you have any metrics at all to back up your assertion?
There are none. But judging by the metrics that are available, aka, Steam, ED is not thriving, in fact it's losing interest.
ED does have a strong base of followers, but I suspect, the count of that base is stagnant and barely increasing if at all.
I'm not attacking you, I'm questioning the facts you presented. Let's keep it real.
I always find this kind of reply nothing but a head in sand type response. Advising people to just leave and play something else, is, in it's own way, an agreement that yes, there is a problem.
For this game, any game, to survive, it requires players, all kinds of players. Rather than just getting rid of all the unhappy players, would it not be more beneficial to question and then in some way modify their opinion either by game changes that are more inclusive or explanation of why they [game mechanics] are the way they are?
very soon, there will be a core happy bunch of sheep playing the game they want, and no money coming into FDev. So FDev will launch more content, and charge for it, but there won't be enough a playerbase to repay the dev cost.
And that's how games die.
I'm happy out right now, I can do what I enjoy but I see swathes of areas where Elite is just a mess and nothing more than nofun + random(5)
Eh, combat is a core game mechanic, and is and has been broken for months.
What's your answer to that?
SLFs are bugged
NPCs can wake while firing
NPCs have unlimited rockets
'Target highest' threat targets other things than the ship firing at you
NPCs can break your target lock even though they're still locked
NPCs can heal full shields in the blink of an eye
NPC difficuly levels are the wrong way round
NPCs have no limit on weapon effect
Combat is entirely unbalanced
NPCs change difficulty during missions
Module targetting is broken
Want me start on the mission problems? No> Maybe the Exploration bugs?
See, every one is a core gameplay mechanic, and they're broken.
driving around in an SRV does not a game make.
That's a terrible lesson to learn. I am a lead developer in a commercial software house and I can tell you that this is not the way it works. Give the customer what they ask for and next week you'll be stripping it out again with the customer ranting in your ear. When the customer asks for something you meet with them (not something FD can do as they have millions of customers for the one product), and work through the process with them to build a specification. That way you find out what the customer needs, which is invariably different to what they asked for.
Give the customer what they actually need, not what they thought they wanted. No matter how loudly they were asking for it. That is the way to success.
You don't have to worry about ED's future - it doesn't have any. After whatever mediocrity dressed up as "exciting" and "new" "content" drops in Q4
