Thoughts about Installations

Good evening everyone,
while I was surveying the space of my Faction, I stumbled upon some random Installation. I am not sure if I should report it as a buged area, because I never got bounties, fines or terrible security responses and could just train my Reckon/Hatchet Breaking, Close Quarter Manuvering and well watch burn without having to fear ship destruction. Thus I might want to keep the place like it is as a sort of testing ground. Anyway that is neither here nor there.

I wanted to talk about Installations again. Because the one I had the pleasure to explore just now was somewhat of a delight. A lot of internal tunnels you could only access if you either blew up the doors or hacked them, internal defense systems and power structures, overall a lot to see. Sadly most of it doesn't have a use yet. Some stuff already has interactions, like blowing power capacitors up by ramming adds a lot of heat to your ship, but the rest is just dead. I know that some installations got Scenarios to add use to Power Capacitors, but that's it.

But this installation in particular once again reminded me, how could it could be to have complex heist-like actions against Installations, where you need to use small ships/fighters to dig through the bowls of larger structures as a way to reach internal components. I saw a Cargo bay actually buried in one of the tunnels, but didn't manage to hack it, because there was an annoying indestructible cannon. I am rambling again so lets get concrete:

  1. When I enter a big Installation with a Secure Perimeter, there should be a way to avoid getting detected. Silent Running already avoids getting fined/bounty if you hack stuff. A perimeter should work similiar at least for very small things.
  2. Security System, such as Canonns should be either hackable, to disable them without triggering an alert or destructible or at least fail if enough nearby power is cut.
  3. Installation Insides should have stuff for scenarios and missions: Stuff that needs to be repaired, stuff that needs to be blown up for robberies, safes that can be hacked for high valuable commodities, data terminals for well data.
  4. Add even more guts to installations maybe even some only accessible via fighters for extra complex demolition jobs
  5. The combination of Guts only for fighters, the ability to disable security and other internal components to attack, I am sure there is potential for some real interesting heists. Especially if FDev sprinkled in some handcrafted locations with high security (i am talking Rapid Respond level of defense ships) as a challenge for wings to reenact stuff like the robbery of the art museum (the one with the cat mark, if you remember). Please FDev let us believe.

+1

I'll always support more interactions with these kinds of assets! (y)

The current installations and scenarios are a great framework for further gameplay, hopefully it will get fleshed out a bit and not added and left like a few other additions we've seen.

Controversial, maybe, but I'd also prefer if an en masse heist didn't trigger almost every single time I visit an installation. It makes it pretty predictable and transparent. I think it should be a chance of a distress call we receive while flying around (like in the early capital ship battle promo video), a shady offer we get in our inbox, or a task we undertake from a mission board. The chance of a random attack could still be there, but mostly just in systems undergoing war, etc.

Or you could have like I tend to see:

Go to an Installation, hang around, nothing happens, get bored
Go to another Installation, hang around, nothing happens, get bored
Go to another Installation, hang around, nothing happens, get bored
Go to another Installation, hang around, nothing happens, get bored
Go do something else

Edit: I prefer what you get :)

That's pretty weird. Literally every time I've visited an installation since 3.3, I've seen a fight break out if I've waited more than a couple of minutes. Even the isolated installation out at Explorer's Anchorage had a faction attack it when I was there!

Having said that, I've been exploring most of the time since then, so that's maybe 10 or 15 visits in that time. Still a 100% occurrence, or near enough.

I specifically remember because Ghost Giraffe did a video about how the contents of cargo holds change to rarer stuff when a scenario starts - so it was noticable when scenarios didn't start. And then I got one ... and the contents were not as interesting as promised anyway ;) I'm sure they happen, will need to try again

It probably depends on the type of installation as well. For example, tourist and medical installations might experience them more rarely or not at all.

Speaking of tourist installations, it would also be a nice touch to see NPC ships docking with installations, even if we can't yet. The BD+22 3878 Tourist Installation, thousands upon thousands of light years from anywhere else, has swarms of Belugas and Dolphins full of sightseers arriving, flying around it, and just leaving. 🤣 I suppose they don't want to confuse new players.

i mean the one installation i visted didn't trigger a scenario in the 10 times i visited and stayed there for 5 minutes each time. some installations just are dead.

That installation may have belonged to a Faction that was Anarchy governed. These ones you can freely rob with impunity, and not become wanted. although from memory the turret defenses will still attack you, which makes sense IMHO.

I like your suggestions, especially those giving more reason to venture inside. Some already have internal areas that resemble a core reactor sort of thing. It's just crying out for "Blow the Reactor Core" type scenarios/missions.

Have also seen the ones with an internal cargo bay. Frustrating to pirate with current limpets, and restricted room to scoop manually. Most cargo ends up lost unscoopable last time I tried that.

It'd be great to have areas accessable only by SLF too - but before we can have that they'll need some love too. e.g. all SLFs need Data Link Scanner, and perhaps some variant fighters with a hatch breaker/recon/repair limpet and 1-2 tonne cargo bay.

I reckon the installations are an excellent base to build further gameplay on - clearly fdevs intention. Can't wait for fdev to do another feature pass on them. Awesome potential.

yeah that'd be nice, and Bar Installations could have customer ships launch from their docks flying drunk like.

I get maybe a 75% pirate attack rate when visiting installations. I only really notice when it doesn't happen. Perhaps it is that certain types and/or locations are more prone to it than others and it's all coincidence.
