Thoughts from the UK

I am on holiday back in the UK and so only have access to a rig with a 780 ti in it. I thought it would be interesting to set up everything from scratch again as this rig hasn't been configured since December.

It took maybe an hour configuring, installing and being ready to use. I had to seriously oC the 780 ti to get it to anywhere near playable and then only in deep space.

This is when I realised that my standards have become too high. The 780 ti can handle 75 FPS on medium settings at 1080, but it doesn't feel like enough. Playing this game using the ingame super sampling is a must IMO. It is just such a more impressive experience. X1.5 is the only way to fly!

Note... Even the NVIDIA downsampling pales in comparison.

thats for damn sure, i cant believe an oc'd 980 cant do 2x in game!

so intensive this game

im already looking for another 980, the oculus rift is a money pit of doom

I have the 780TI KINGPIN. Not sure if it any different from yours but i have settings maxed out in game and in Nvidia pannel. Im using custon resolution istead of the DSR options. Works smooth as for me.

Would you recommend scrapping a single 970 and going to 2 980's? Is it really that much of a step up?

I run a single 970. My mate has a single 980 and I have played about with DSR with his rig (in game and nvidias) and cant justify the small % increase, but I havent spent a huge amount of time tweaking.

My main rig has two 980 s in it and even that can only manage x2 in the graphics options.
NVIDIA downsampling is much less intensive than the ingame one, but the ingame option is sooooo much better!

I much prefer the ingame supersampling

980s sli is the only option for getting in game SS.

maybe a titan X, but its clock speed is lower than the 980...so i dont know whats up with the titan...

but remember x2 in game = more than 1440p...so in the future when the HMD is 1440p dual 980s should smoke it just fine

so while we strive to bleed this dk2, the consumer versions will look better, no screen door and not require super sampling...

it doesnt have screen door
its already been shown at recent shows, no screen door.
or certainly not noticeable with human eyes

Completely untrue. People claim they can still see the SDE, although it's less noticeable, but it is also noticably less sharp.. which leads to believe they are masking the SDE with the optics. It's still there.

The titan x overclocks easy on air to give 10 percent increase fps over stock. You still cant in game super sample beyond 1.5 x tho but to be honest I don't think there is much improvement. The old saying of polishing a turd comes to mind with dk2 resolution. I still cant have the oculus rift settings at max tho in space stations or RES, in space maximum crankage is fine!

What do you think, perhaps there's some room for optimisation in the code and Oculus as a product? I'm convinced, even with my limited usage, that I've found a number of scenarios where performance is being limited by things other than hardware. That's not knocking what we have as it's still the most amazing experience but Cobra tweaks, DX12, Liquid VR and Nvidia equivalents will likely give people more bandwidth for things like super sampling over the next 6-12 months.

you are 100% correct.

You are right about There not being much not able difference beyond X1.5 , but that res is worlds apart from native or even the downsampling option done in the control panel.
980s in SLI can handle X1.5 and Max settings everywhere, though some stations bring it down into judder world again.
Was going to buy a titan x for this rig here in UK, but am only back for ten days, so have bid for another 780 ti on eBay to tide me over until the summer. I think there will be more buying options by then and hopefully a VR driver or two.

you are 100% correct.

I still think the game code could optimised further in game while we wait (specifically in station for VR.) But at this point that seems unlikely.

I prefer running the game on default "Ultra" settings without any supersampling. With my single 980 it's usually completely judder free, even in stations (except somtimes for no apparent reason it isn't, not too often luckily).
With any supersampling I get judder in stations, not matter how low I set the other settings. To me a judder-free view far outweighs the improvements with supersampling.

try low shadows, dsr 1.5-2 (from nvidia control panel)
ansiotropic from nvcp @ 8-16x

you will see a big difference compared to no dsr and a single 980 can do it with a minimal overclock

In all of the faff and nonsense about the SDE effect, those that have actually tested the latest 'alpha' hardware offerings have stated a significant reduction in the SDE.

However, all state that none of the demos previewed within the HMDs showed any text....

....I wonder why?

Back to the "real-life-DK2-SDE-experience-that-I-simply-look-through-as-I-journey-off-to-a-another-planetary-system" type of thing for me....

Nosh

I find this level of performance from my 980 also. What about RES though? Shortly after entering one my FPS bomb out.... A damn shame as I mostly bounty hunt.....

i was in the res last night NP at all.
but im using med-high and shadows low, but dsr x2 via nvcp
oc'd to 1550/8000 required though for me

Have you tried the ingame sampling? I just find it 100 % better all round. For me X1.5 ingame looks better than x4 NVIDIA control panel.
