Horizons Thoughts on an SRV drop..

Come in low in your ship, perhaps 30m or so and select "deploy." Your on-board takes over flight, you jump into the SRV and it drops you onto the ground without having to land.

Eg (0:30s mark)

i love this idea! talk a about a grand entrance!
I always wondered why we cant airdrop the srv, it has the suspension and the thrusters for that kind of stunt..
or even have an air pickup of the srv, boosting to a low flying ship!

When 2.2 comes out, why not go the whole hog...?

Anaconda releases Sidewinder at low orbit, which drops to 20-30km and then drops your SRV out of its PVH :D

(Of course, I'm not expecting to be able to fit a Sidey with a PVH into an Anaconda when 2.2 hits, but it would be kinda awesome...)

No reason why they can't activate the deploy SRV at a certain speed and height with an automatic dismiss ship from there, and let us decide how to use it.

Like the idea, but have you seen the damage an SRV takes just hitting a medium sized rock and safe speeds? :)

that is what the thrusters would be for...

would make for a very cool start to a base invasion, however it could be by design that FD want is to attack the perimeter on foot as it were (tho i have seen a video of CMDrs land under fire in the middle of a base and dismiss tthier ship. perhaps this is high risk however, i am not sure how much damage they are likley to dake doing this.

I used to think that a high fall would be too much of a risk, then I saw that one video by one of the Fuel Rats, something like what they do when bored, taking a flying leap off one of those abnormal high plateaus. And survived.

I've driven off cliffs higher than 50m (pretty sure one was at least 100m though I can't be sure, but it took a long time to fall..) and landed with only a minute amount of damage. Thrusters are key here; you don't want to just blow all your thrust in one go because then you'll just accelerate again, you want to spew forth thruster power in bursts. Then the last 10-20m you release it all and voila. :)

Then you drive forward 20m, hit a small rock, roll and lose 25% of your hull.
