Thoughts on fleet carriers now

Would you mind telling us, how you archived that? By hunting Thargoids?
I've seen a few comments from players saying they love their FC and it's got 5 years upkeep paid for and they're perfect as they are and - cough- allthiswaspossiblebecauseminingltdswhenitnettedbillions -cough-

:D

All present company excluded of course.

I'm just grumpy because my perfect little mission system just had two factions go into an entirely pointless civil war, ruining the number of pirate massacre missions for probably 28 days because I'm the only player there and can't hope to shift either faction up by the required 5% on my own. Don't mind me.

Hip 20277>Fabian City hunting in Calenerro (haz rez near planets 4 and 5).

7 factions so even with a war going on you can stack missions off the other 5.

it's in ALD PP territory so a rank 2 bonus nets even more pennies for minimal effort.

Good luck from another guy with many years upkeep, and no mining performed beyond engineer unlocks.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

The system I'm at now was paying really fast credits for bounty hunting, to the point I was actually thinking a FC was in reach (over 1bn in a week mostly BH mission income with the odd delivery to break things up). This just slowed it right down.

It's 5 factions that offer BH massacre missions, plus 2 that don't (one pirate, the other only does assassinations and illegal missions). And the controlling faction has no state and is a bit floppy with missions in general.

Was nice while it lasted though.

You should be able to make the same there no trouble, obviously depending of faction states and a bit of patience board hopping.

I normally wait until I have at least 80 kills for 5 factions before heading out and park my FC near the haz rez in case I need re-arm (2,000ls travel in both systems)

You'll also get the option for loads of g5 mats and there a mat trader at Fabian so that's really handy for trading down/ cross trading too.

there is a new system in place since a few updates, which will allow you to win on your own if there is no opposition, check out the bgs subforum thread on war/civil war

Our wing uses ours for everything... couldn't imagine not having one at this point. There could be some improvements but that's always the case with anything. All in all one of my fav additions to the game. Upkeep is easy and we have never had a fuel issue... though we seldom journey too far from the bubble.

My thoughts on FCs:
I am not buying one as long as they require upkeep.
Not really bothered by upkeep fee, more like what can I do with a FC initially. Not interested in buying one until I looked at my account with 9.8 billion credits last week, wondering what else should I spend those credits on since I already have basically all the ships I want to own (13 ships), so decided to just buy one FC, spent 6 billion credits on it, now I have a new aspect of this game I can play and grind  As for paying for my FC upkeep, one painite mining run with my Python and I can pay for 3 months of upkeep. Easy :)

One way to look at the upkeep fee is the salary you as the owner pay to all the hired crews who maintain and operate the FC. FC is a big ship, can't be operated by just one person, you need a team of crews. You don't fly the FC, remember it is commanded by a hired captain who you have to pay a salary. So yes we do own the FC when we bought it, but it cannot function or travel anywhere without a team of crews.

Came across this thread while researching info on FC. If I intended using my proposed FC mainly as a mining/exploration vehicle then would I be correct in thinking I wouldn't need the very expensive A rated fuel scoops on my bigger ships, or would I?.

Sometimes I don't play the game for months. It's almost guaranteed that my FC would be decommissioned before I had the chance to try it out...

if you install refueling services - no, not. but on the other hand - what do you do with the CR you can spent on fuelscoop if out exploring? you can sell them anytime if you need cash.

For me, the benefit of not having to fit scoops on most of my ships now is more to free up module space for other stuff, rather than credits (let's face it, if you can afford a carrier you can afford anything else in the game). My dedicated explorer/bubble hopping ships still carry one though, and those ships with a really small fuel tank.

I agree if you don't play ED for a few months at times, then FC is not a good idea for you. Either that or if you do get a FC, you have to manually decommission your FC when you are away from this game for long time. When you return, you can buy it back again, that's my understanding.

Honestly I love my FC. It was a game changer for me as I like to dabble in a little bit of everything but mostly combat.

Now I can keep all my stuff in one easy to move/manage spot, and swap ships or modules on a whim and even have the option for all of it to come to me if I'm busy doing some thing.

The weekly upkeep is negligible compared to the credits I can earn in that time.
Mine currently costs about 12mil a week and I can earn that doing half a dozen Elite assassination or massacre missions which takes about an hour at most.

I've got a mining ship for gathering Tritium (it's not nearly as much hassle as people make out after all the recent patches).
I don't do much in the way of trading, beyond selling a load of painite/LTDs/VOs that I've just mined, so I set my FC Market to buy Tritium at a reasonable price on the off chance that I earn a bit of fuel on the side.
My FC is never over flowing with fuel but it's always ticking over nicely.

Before FCs I was making about 100mil a week casually murdering pirates and occasionally mining or exploring.
Now I'm making about 90mil a week casually murdering pirates etc.

I still need to get the UC service for it so it can make some more money, but all in all the cost of managing my FC hasn't effected my gameplay or need to grind in the slightest, if anything it's made the grind easier.

If your plan is to ride your carrier as though it were a ship, and then explore a short distance away from it, that could work (though I'd be nervous out there without a fuel scoop, myself).

In my case I'm only docking on the carrier every ten to fourteen days to sell data, repair my ship integrity, and accidentally repair my paint. I scout out ahead to find the carrier's next destination and then it follows me through jumps I schedule remotely.

Another question, can fleet carriers be attacked and/or can they defend theirselves?. For example, I am on my way back to my FC after a mining mission for tritium and get attacked, of course I am capable of defending my self but in case I decide to make a break for my carrier will the carrier fire on the attacker once inside the 3.5k zone or can they just continue to attack me while I land etc etc.

The common questions are answered in the Fleet Carrier FAQ.

A carrier is armed like a station and, like a station, it defends its no-fire zone. Carriers can't be damaged or destroyed.

It's actually really close to where I am now, within a single jump hehe.

Only issue is no rearm but we can just use your FC if it's open :)
