Does upgrading your thrusters increase speed and mobility? or the amount of mass you can carry?

It definitely increases your speed and your rotation/turning rates.

To be able to haul more cargo and jump further away you need a better Frame Shift Drive.

I would upgrade first your power distribution and then powerplant
Gives you more juice
