Hardware & Technical Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X

Show me an aircraft, any aircraft or space craft that is controlled with a mouse or a trackball!
Freelancer did it pretty good. With a mice I wouldn'tdo it, but a thumbtrackerball is reactive enough. Ah well, I am getting a stickie again, see how that works, my last stickie was on my C=64, for playing eilte ofcourse ;o)
And thanks for all the messages, looks like it isn't a bad buy, and it looks like I got is cheap, Conrad had it for 39,95 euro, a prety nice price for a joystick+.

Stopped trying to do it with my thumbtrackerball from logitech and ordered a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X I hope that is good enough for the game, because I can't afford anything better right now. Can't wait until it is here so I can try the game with a joystick.(but I have to ;o( )

I got one and I love it.
Then again I don't have any experience with other sticks(this is my first). But I was able to configure all of the functions to play the game with the stick alone.
My personal favorite feature was to assign throttle buttons as shift keys for the hat switch. Which I can then use to look around the cockpit, navigate menus and use as lateral thrusters for landing and take-off procedures.

I know someone linked a Thrustmaster control setup earlier, but I would suggest this one as it has modifiers (add extra buttons basically). I have tried alot of setups but this is by far the easiest to use even though I have the majority of them voice activated via VoiceAttack. You can view it here and it also comes with a 'binds' file that you import into Elite Dangerous for ease: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=16140&page=4&p=671075#post671075 (Binds file is in the post, picture for key map is in the quote)

The only downside I have noticed is that if you are too quick holding the flight control modifier and hitting boost, you can sometimes deploy hardpoints. This can be fixed by changing the 'Use trigger to deploy' setting in ED. (May not be the exact name but its along those lines)

What I love about this joystick is that you can use the rudder on the back of the throttle for yaw control, my brain likes to have rudder control in a different hand than the one that's doing the other axis. I wouldn't buy another one that doesn't allow to do that.

Joystick makes some creeky sounds but not that big of an issue.

[EDIT] BTW thanks for the tip on using some buttons as a modifier for having way more functions, I didn't have buttons enough anymore, now I do :)

i have this also & for the price it's a must have. I got it just after ED broke my FLY 5

but what's this about a modifier ? How does that work ?

Most people use the hat switch for thrusters. If you don't want to use your keyboard for power settings. You can assign the modifier by, for example, left ctrl+left hat pov for systems, left ctr+up pov for engines. Haven't tried it yet maybe left slider+up pov for engines. (totally not using the key board)

Basically... Enter ED's control configuration, find something useful to bind such as heat sink. Press and hold a button on your throttle and press another button on your stick (trigger for example). You will now notice that the game says 'JOY1 + JOY2' or something similar. Now, you can press trigger all you want to shoot and the heat sink will only deploy if you hold that other button first.

I've had mine for many years and I really like it. Coupled with VoiceAttack I don't need the keyboard. The throttle has six buttons, which is more than you'll find on any other HOTAS on the market, all the others have hats and axes which aren't necessarily relevant for ED.

I've just ordered one of these sticks the other day. One question, the box states compatibility with PC/PS3. Is it also compatible with a Mac?

I play ED on my mbp under bootcamp - it works perfectly. I've not tried it in osx itself but will try running an emulator with it and get back to you. I believe it should be totally fine though.

The only thing to note is that when I first plugged it in, I didn't realise it had a PS3/PC switch on the stick section, rendering rudder control completely useless. Remember to switch it to 'PC' before you play :p

Hi Folks,

I'm also thinking about buying this one. I Just tried it out at the store and it makes a great impression to me.

But the small number of buttons bothers me a bit. I have a question about that.

I read about the modifiers and that they make it possible to assign more functions to the same buttons but what about the presets?

As I understood it, there are presets for certain games and then there is a custom profile.
Is it possible to somehow customize the presets so that you would eventually end up having 2 profiles, which you could switch through in game?

I brought one of these for when elite releases and have been testing it in the game H.A.W.K, it is a really nice looking stick but I have one problem with it. There is a deadzone on the stick, pulling completely down on the stick stops pulling the plane up and its getting really annoying. Any of you guys have this trouble?

The deadzone is shown in windows testing as well as was wondering if any has any ideas or if mine is just broken

Thanks

So glad I found this. The new Launcher (3.91) resulted in my game actually looking like it works for once whereas 3.05 wouldn't even let me select anything.
I opted for the game to determine my set up and to my amazement it decided High so next step - order a joystick! I saw a Logitech 3D Pro in Maplin (other stores ARE available!) but reading on here this looked like a good reasonably priced buy, and ordered with cashback too!!!

Can't wait for it to arrive (and a little relieved that after evil boss cut my freelance hours I couldn't afford to upgrade the PC or buy the Saitek super duper one!)
