I know they are rare as over the last millennium only four supernova events in the Milky Way have been recorded and the last of those was over 400 years ago.here's hoping I see a long awaited event in my lifetime.....
But isn't it time to put a Supernova event in the game? There are some familiar names such as Betelgeuse, Eta Carinae or Mu Cephei that are suspected of going Supernova in the near astronomical future. And if the game decided to destroy one of those stars we can currently see in the night sky would it be outrageous? If Betelgeuse went Supernova around the reign of Henry VIII we would still have no idea now.
There is a near Supernova candidate 150lyrs away called IK Pegasi where a DA White Dwarf is in close orbit of an A star. The White Dwarf is gathering matter from the star and may reignite it and blow up the WD.Not sure if IK Pegasi is in the game though?
The best candidate out there is Gamma Velorum,a Wolf Rayet Star which has been a restricted system (I think) since the game was launched. When I found it was restricted I presumed it was for a future Supernova but that was over three years ago.
So is it time for something in the galaxy to go boom (and give us bored explorers something new to do)?
