Time for a supernova explosion in the galaxy?

I know they are rare as over the last millennium only four supernova events in the Milky Way have been recorded and the last of those was over 400 years ago.here's hoping I see a long awaited event in my lifetime.....

But isn't it time to put a Supernova event in the game? There are some familiar names such as Betelgeuse, Eta Carinae or Mu Cephei that are suspected of going Supernova in the near astronomical future. And if the game decided to destroy one of those stars we can currently see in the night sky would it be outrageous? If Betelgeuse went Supernova around the reign of Henry VIII we would still have no idea now.

There is a near Supernova candidate 150lyrs away called IK Pegasi where a DA White Dwarf is in close orbit of an A star. The White Dwarf is gathering matter from the star and may reignite it and blow up the WD.Not sure if IK Pegasi is in the game though?

The best candidate out there is Gamma Velorum,a Wolf Rayet Star which has been a restricted system (I think) since the game was launched. When I found it was restricted I presumed it was for a future Supernova but that was over three years ago.

So is it time for something in the galaxy to go boom (and give us bored explorers something new to do)?

In Known Space, the center of the galaxy is exploding, and in 20,000 years, a wave of radiation will sweep through the Human-influenced bubble and kill/sterilize everything alive.

And that's why exploring is important, there must be a Ringworld out there somewhere!

But seriously, it would have to be a scripted event, and far enough away from inhabited space that the radiation doesn't kill the bubble, people in general don't like long range CG's so I am not sure I would work very well, but it is indeed worth doing at least once.

Just came across this:

Wikipedia - Luminous red nova

Obviously phenomena like novae (classical novae, recurrent novae, dwarf novae or luminous red novae) are more common than full scale supernova explosions and therefore, I think, it wouldn't be to unbelievable to include some and of course I'd love to see something like this in the game. Imo it can never hurt to have more interesting things for explorers to discover (Q4 maybe?).

The last estimate I know of put the rate of supernovae in the galaxy at one per fifty years (50yrs).

If this was part of the background simulation then it'd be one extreme easter egg -- so a scripted event does seem more likely.

But I would like to think that StellerForge would generate a few ultra-rare easter eggs such as a ring world somewhere in the galaxy (location unknown to FD as well) -- would make exporation much more enticing.

However I don't think that a ringworld would save you from the exploding core. What you need to do is form all your homeworlds into a rosetta configuration and fly them away.

...and make sure you 'pay off' anyone who knows the location of said homeworlds.

Imagine jumping into a system just to have a dyson sphere around the planet

now that would be an easter egg and a half

This isn't too far off what I've suggested more than once. Galactic phenomena are practically nonexistent in Elite, making even deep space exploration rather mundane and predictable. The fact that hyperspace travel is so simple means the biggest surprise you'll ever get on exiting a jump is finding yourself between two stars. No meteor showers, no comets, no stray asteroids drifting into a collision course with anything, and certainly no supernovas...

While supernova are rare, there are regular repeating nova events to look forward to.

However before these could arrive we'd need to have driving forces like accretion disks modelled. They would still be rare though, but more measurable odds.

Imagine the posts on these forums after player jump into systems undergoing nova eruptions... Everything is white/orange and you heat gauge is on fire. Jump or burn...
