Time for an X wing vs Tie Fighter reeboot?

Time for an X wing vs Tie Fighter reboot?

Hi

What do you reckon?.... wiith the resurgence of space games AND resurgence of star wars IP dont you think Disney / lucasarts / whoever owns the rights now to the star wars franchise are missing a trick here?

it seems to me a no brainer that the time is ripe for a reboot of this classic game.

And FGS make it primarily story driven campaign game (possibly with MP options) like the original game and dont dumb it down to a simple arena shooter like the last starwars game (battlefront).

The xwing etc games got so much right in the space genre and with the rich lore and instantly recognisable style that most sci fi nerds love i think it would be an instant success if done well.

What do you reckon? I know i would buy it!.

I don't know. It's a tricky one.
It's one of those things that are better off being not made, than made poorly.

EA owns these rights...doesn't give me confidence. TIE Fighter still holds up well (not really). :)

EA..... I dunno, SOME of the stuff they make they do well...... the risk isnt imo that it would be a technically poor games... its just that they would simply dumb it down to a multiplayer arena shooter like battlefront... and thus miss the entire point of the xwing / tie fighter games.

dead space, mass effect, dragon age, Battle field badcompany... all these games are, or at least contain reasonable story driven games.

but i see your point

I'm afraid EA would turn it into like some sort of open world game where you need to "clear" areas and find missions.

I know very linear campaigns like those in TIE Fighter are considered outdated but I think it serves the Star Wars Universe well when you are just some expendable pilot taking orders from some mid-tier officer. I think EA might try to make you out as some obvious god-hero constantly augmenting their strength with gears and special sticks they find scattered across the map. Whereas in TIE Fighter you were just some nobody pilot that slowly rises in the ranks. It is only ever hinted to the fact that you are the famed Imperial pilot Maarek Stele.

I think I'm getting old...uh oh

Even something like the TIE Fighter Collectors edition version given a HD makeover, better bitrate speech and non-MIDI music and optimized for VR headsets would be a terrific experience :D

No need to change anything major - keep the underlying game, story, missions etc - just make it slightly more friendly for modern expectations and it'll be a winner :)

Of course, going for a full-blown TIE fighter VR experience could lead to all sorts of wonderfulness :) It could, given the appetite of modern gaming audiences, also lead to the biggest pile of lumpy steamers since SQIJ.

EA (or any other AAA publisher) would never make an actual space sim these days.

Complex missions, HOTAS support, having an actual game manual, all these things have become totally niche. Compare the sales figures and customer demographics of something like Elite Dangerous with the ones of modern AAA games.

It's just not going to happen, sorry.

If that happened, I'd die. Sure, I'd miss out on it, but at least I'd die with happy thoughts.

If they said they were re-doing TIE Fighter in VR and then gave us the unholy abomination that is Rogue Squadron or Battlefront or any other of a overflowing cornucopia of awful Star Wars games :)

We all probably fondly remember tie vs. xwing as being far better than it is compared to modern games, list SC and ED.

I'd love to see it if they wrapped it up in kind of a star wars galaxies (the defunct game from sony).. that was an awesome game. It had all the benefits of tie vs. xwing, plus fully customizable ships, and a ground based game, if you were into that.

I'm replaying it now, it's still fantastic (if you can see past the dated graphics). A little too unforgiving for a lot of modern gamers though.

Yeah, but that is what makes it so great. Besides, you can make it easier by going with unlimited ammo or invulnerability right from the menu.

True I like it hard though, that's half the fun. Go left when you should go right and it's force ghost time. Can't get the twist-rudder to work though, the game pre-dates those I think.

Stormprooter mentioned there's a x-wing/tie-fighter fan mod TC of fs2open in the work's using the original missions, but I haven't checked on that for a long time.

It does have yaw and roll, but I usually have roll bound to a couple keys. I think you could get your controller software to handle the input but I've never put the effort into it.

Yeah, it's push joystick button 2 and stick left or right to roll but you don't really need to roll in space if you can yaw. So I only do it when I think it'll help maximise hit chances by matching my laser's orientation to the target. Not bothered enough to fix it.

Strikes me that FD should look at the missions within Xwing for inspiration towards missions for wings in ED, e.g. Ambushes against convoys, convoy protection, base attacks. They could even be graded, such that some missions can only be done in say a small craft, or even SLFs, with their home ship hiding 10km back from the objective. All possible, just given some thought.
