Time of Beta release?

The last alpha will probably be the bones of the full game. A sandbox.

I'm hoping everything is reset for the start of the gamma. Start fresh when the game is ready.

Really? I guess they define a beta release somewhat different from what I'm used to then. What does the beta contain that's not in the alphas combined? If it's the missions removed/moved out, in favor of the general sandbox universe, then the beta contains new code and so should be regarded as an alpha.

I think that would depend on the purpose behind the current missions (scenarios). I don't look at the current scenarios as being self contained parts of ED, more as test-beds for the nuts and bolts of the game.

What elements we'd hope would work from the end of Alpha 4.xx:

  • AI ships spawning and acting appropriately
  • Stations acting appropriately
  • Trading established
  • Equipment purchase working
  • Loot generation established
  • Bounties working correctly
  • Travel between areas of space working (PoIs) - no loss of assets (including inter system travel)
  • General stability (no/few CTDs)
  • P2P networking working correctly
  • Ship loadouts working correctly
  • Stealth working correctly
  • Combat rules working correctly
  • Scanners working correctly

I've probably missed several (that's just off the top of my head). I've not included frame-shift drive as that's an alternative to hyperspace intra-system hopping, we may or may not see that before Beta 1. You can combine those working elements to make areas of space perform different functions, it's not new code, it's re-application of existing code. So you can make a sandbox from what we've tested/will have tested. It wont be complete - more a skeletal basis for the finished product, but a good foundation to start a Beta with I'd guess.

TLDR - We're testing Lego bricks, you can use those Lego bricks to build different things without changing the nature of the bricks themselves.

Yes, I agree with what you say, but there are some things we haven't tested yet. For instance other type of ships and space stations. They may have different configuration than the others we have tested. So that'd be new code then.

I still see them primarily as Lego bricks. Ships are just 3D constructs, they'll have different parameters from what we've already flown but the parameter types should be consistent (shields, hardpoints, equipment points etc.). If each of those parameters are just another element, then everything should be self adjusting.

The same for stations, they're 3D constructs, which we enter via holes in them, if the landing bays are interactive elements built into the model, landing on them and accessing station facilities would work the same as with a Coriolis.

The only new code is the code for the 3D models themselves, which could be tested discretely by FD internally before being incorporated into a release.

Release date?

Hi, I am just curious when the final version of Elite Dangerous will be available for delivery? I had expected it this april (according to the ED page on Kickstarter) So will there be a big delay or am I just too impatient?:S

Several months away yet, more than six for commercial release, less than that perhaps for gamma, I.e. General kickstarter release, but still unsure...

For the end of 2014. But if you pre-ordered the final version, you can play the gamma at midsummer, probably. And do not forget the reference response "Soon ()". And welcome to the great family of the Elite

I doubt that Gamma will be so soon. We still have at least two Premium Betas, followed by Standard Beta.

Thx, I 've been an Elite player since it was first released in the 80's... I succeeded to become a 'dangerous' player if I remember it correctly. I tried for Elite but failed... I always was a big fan of SF books. My favourite writers are Alfred Bester, Jack Vance, Orson Scott Card and Douglas Adams... :)

Premium beta on May 30th. Perhaps standard beta for the beginning or the middle of July. And gamma to mid-August, end of August (mid-summer). "Soon (™)" always means a long time in general

:)

I wasn't referring to "Soon (™)" as I pretty much understand how "Soon (™)" it could happen.

But as we now have 1.5-2 month between Alpha versions I do not expect faster releases of Betas.

Also it is stated here:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11113
"Alpha is now live, this will continue until Frontier decides that the game is ready to goto Premium Beta (1st stage)"

So I guess we will have several Premium Beta stages prior to Standard Beta. So my prediction is beginning of Autumn for Gamma, end of Autumn for final release, however release might be pushed back to the Holidays 2014.

Well, the correct answer is when its ready. Having said that:

1. The feature set for the 1.0 release is already locked by the developer, so it essentially boils down to implementation.

2. There are three phases until release. Alpha (ending in May), Premium Beta, Beta and Gamma. I think we are going to get the feature complete version in the Gamma phase.

I would say, if FD can make it for Christmas it would be a miracle in my eyes. I am more concerned really though with having a bold and polished release, not a speedy or inflexible one. The game, the developer and the fans deserve it.

A lot of people on this forum, me included, believe that the game will be released this September to co-inside with the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Elite. In his recent very interesting interview with David Braben Scott Manley suggested this date as a possible release date and David didn't really go out of his way to deny this date was in Frontiers thoughts so watch this space...:D
