Horizons Time to upgrade to Horizons?

You are kidding right, Horizons was just on steam sale for 16 odd euros and you are still wondering if it's worth updating with the content being added in 2.1 & 2.2, basically only half way thru the season. Do you want the new content for free or how low does the price have to go. Really such posts are bloody farcical at this stage.

Just look at the feature list - planets you can land on/explore (it's more interesting than it sounds!), and later, the ability to share ships (I presume two of you can take turns to fly it, take out an SRV, etc).

There is no point waiting!

Well, I finally upgraded to Horizons and I'm on the fence on whether or not it's worth it. I'm not talking worth it in $, I'm talking about worth it in gameplay. I've landed on a few planets, spent a lot of time driving around looking for certain rocks (and coming across mining sites, crashed probes, etc). I've also spent a few hours scanning ship wakes as well as hunting down wanted ships to collect the pieces that drop, also for engineer upgrades because really, that's what Horizons is all about.

And I have to say, it's kind of "Meh". At least in the base game, you can make a few jumps and trade, or bounty hunt, or do some missions and in 15 minutes you make some progress, get some reward. I drive around on a planet for an hour, or wake scan for an hour, or BH for parts for an hour, and I don't find what I'm actually after. In fact, after about 8 hours of this kind of effort, I found 2 rocks, 1 scan, and no parts for an FSD upgrade I'm after.

Now I'm not saying after 8 hours I had absolutely nothing but 2 rocks and a scan, I did pick up lots of rocks, lots of scans, and lots of parts, and they will probably be useful for something, but I'll have to fly to all of the engineers and look at all of the blueprint options to determine what's what.... and I haven't even started on the commodity stuff, or whatever requirements each engineer has just to say hello.....

So yeah, I'm not too impressed at the moment at the time vs reward ratio. And although planetary driving watching the wave scanner is a new twist, after an hour the novelty kind of wears off. I sure hope the RNGupgrades are spectacular!

Maybe my approach is wrong, maybe I should stick with the usual missions and CG's, and the occasional mining trip and just pick up stuff as I go along, then drop by an engineer to see what I can get rather than target a specific upgrade.........
The only thing that doesn't work with that is the lack of storage, you can't decide to do some mining, then a few missions, and then some BH without the hassle of RNG commodities in the hold, never mind the constant interdictions of pirates wanting all that tasty cargo a few units of x ....... it's astounding that this hasn't been addressed.....

I can't imagine this game without the Horizon features. I'm on planets in pretty much every session I play. So much more to the game with the addition of planetary landings. The cost for the upgrade is laughable compared to what it adds to the game.

As long as you have a PC that can run it, you are really missing out. This will be even more the case when 2.2 comes out.

You do not have to fly to each engineer to look at their blueprints mate, the suggestion was made earlier that inara.cz was your new friend. Look on there and you can see all of the blueprints, together with who uses them and what you get when you have applied them, there is also a nice option to click on a list commodity on a blueprint and it will tell you where to find them or a clue!

Take your time to get used to the differences, this is a marathon not a sprint. :D o7
