Tips for Beginners

Hi,

Firstly I would like mention that I really like the game, visually it's incredibly and it's something I can really sink into and lose myself for a while.

However..

I'm finding it really hard.
I've put quite a lengthy amount of hours into it in the hopes that maybe I would progress and become quite understanding of the game.
I've started to get hang of it, but I won't lie..I've become very bored of being blown up what are classed as "harmless" enemies..I can't complete the missions because of this and therefore I can't earn the credits to start getting better gear in order to dive into the game more..

I understand the game wants to be a hard game, but I believe that considering I'm a paying customer I should be able to least know how to play the game when i first start (I did a lot of YouTube watching to find things out) and that i didn't pay money to continuously get blown up and have to jump and supercruise back to the point I was at to 'try again'.

As you probably know, I've started with a sidewinder with standard stuff..I like the idea of doing bounty hunting but maybe it's not something to start the game with..

Is it possible for experienced players to give me some tips on what the :):):):) I can actually do in order to start earning credits and perhaps enjoy the game? I do like the game, and I do want to get good at it..but I personally believe if this carries on then I'll end up giving up with it and placing Call of Duty back in :(

Thanks for any help received.

1. Read the manual
2. Play in solo and/or get out of the core systems/starter worlds.
3. Enjoy.

I would offer to help you but the last guy I helped turned out to be a grifter who was scamming lots of peopel with the same sob story so I only give advice and not credits any longer.

If bounty hunting is the way you want to go, I would go to nav beacons in systems and scan for wanted enemies there. Usually as long as it isn't an anarchy system there are other ships to help (NPCs). Try to pick fights with low tier ships like the sidewinder. As I understand it, as long as you do damage to a wanted target you get some bounty. It may be a bit of a grind but that's how I experimented with the bounty hunting. Someone who does it more often may have better tips.

Some good YouTube vids aimed at newbs also look on the groups section there are a couple of groups that aims to take you out and give u tips once winged up

I am part of a group dedicated to helping new commanders, my sig has a link, follow it and sign up if interested. I should be around in about 2 hours either answer questions or come to you and help out.

Well..... I am relatively new to the game(2wks of casual gaming/ dad duties) but I would follow Doc by starting with them nav beacons. Don't be to quick to fire. Kill scan you target then sub target the wanted ship. I Normaly select power plant, but other CMDR's might advise shields first) If it's a better ship than you then sit tight, and don't get ichy trigger finger issues, wait a while for friendly ships to help out. Don't get to close. Set your pips to, three weapons and around one/ two to both engines and systems. With in a short while you should be hitting around 500cr per half hr. When you are happy and you've upgraded your weapons and internals a bit then you can have a go at low RES , Before jumping to RES then high RES. It won't take too long before you have enough to try mining or trading with a decent starter ship ( adder or wot ever).
So.... Good luck fellow CMDR. :D
Ps can some one please tell me wot a UA is?

*Ok, welcome to the game, first, go to a high intensity resource extraction site, kremainn is good for those, next wait until the security service start shooting at a target, lock the target, WAIT for the scan to complete and say wanted- you must do this.

Next, shoot the target and stay in range while the Feds do most of the work, wait for the Feds to kill the target, bingo you get the payout. Rinse, repeat, within two hours you'll be in a cobra (probably).*

Good luck see you in the black cmdr.

That is all.

Check out us helpful CMDR's, just shows what a great player base this game has. Pats himself on the back.

Plus I think you have to have a shot in just before the target blows up( 10 secs or something like that.....?)

Yeah, probably what he said, I did this in gpp. ( I have a disclaimer).

My advice is do bulletin board trade missions til you get enough to buy a better ship. I know it sucks/is boring but if you are dying a lot its probably the best course of action. Missions are boring but dying costs money. You want your balance to go up not down. A lot of the bulletin board combat missions arent easy. The target usually is in a wing or a much bigger ship than you. Its definitely possible to kill a big ship in a Sidewinder, Eagle or Viper but you really have to know what you are doing to accomplish it.

Theres a reputation system in place where the more missions you do for a faction, the higher the missions pay out. So try to do missions for the same factions at the same stations as often as possible. Once you get to friendly or allied with a faction, the station and their ships will turn green on the radar. Once this happens the bulletin board missions start paying out a lot more and it wont take long to save up money. 20 missions at 50,000 reward is $1 million. Do this four times and you have enough for your Vulture. Seems like a lot of grinding but its really not. Probably take you a week at a leisurely pace.

If you buy your ship from a station exploited by Li Yong Rui it will have a 15% discount on the price. You can see Li Yong Rui systems by going to the galaxy map and switching to powerplay view. For the money the Vulture is pound for pound the best combat ship in the game.

Once you have a Vulture, if you like pew pewing its time to farm Combat Zones for cash. Look for a system that is in civil war state. You can tell two ways. First if docked, you look at the rep tab and see different factions in 'Civil War' that means there will be combat zones in that system. Or when you are flying in supercruise, combat zones will usually appear as targetable areas in the space close to the planet. They will say things like Low Intensity Combat Zone or Hazardous Combat Zone. This determines the type of ships that will spawn there. Hazardous will have lots of big dangerous ships, low will have more smaller ships. The bigger ships pay more bounty though.

Once you are there goto the system tab and goto Function and there you choose a faction in the combat zone to fight for. You have to choose a side to get the rewards for killing ships in the combat zone. This is important if you dont pick a side you get no money. Now pew pew til your hearts content and tally up bounties. To cash in return to station in that system and goto contacts then combat bonds. If you die before you cash out you lose all the money you have earned so if your hull gets low go cash out, repair and go back out.

Once you get to this point cash will pretty much roll in from farming combat zones. You can easily make 1 million/hour farming.

You also have to consider the type of ships you are attacking and stay sorta near your equal until you get decent at combat. A harmless Python is not really harmless to a Sidewinder.

Learn to manipulate your pips in combat. When your are taking a lot of fire put 4 pips to shields that gives your shields 150% strength. When you want to deal damage put more pips to weapons, when you want to run away 4 pips to engines.

If you are in danger of dying theres no shame in running away. Retract your weapons and jump away. Keep a mental note that if your hull gets to a certain percentage (say 50%) its time to retreat.

Another thing I didnt know about starting out was shield cell banks. Currently shields are pretty much the most important thing in combat so keeping them from dropping is important. Shield cell banks are internal modules that use ammo and have charges. If you use it before your shield goes down it restores your missing shield. They do nothing when your shield is completely down so if you are in combat and your shield drops, its best to fly out of range and let them come back online.

My final piece of advice is MAKE SURE YOU KEEP ENOUGH CASH TO COVER YOUR INSURANCE COST OF REPLACING YOUR SHIP IF YOU DIE.
In the system tab you can see the total value of your ship and the rebuy cost. Keep enough cash on hand to always have the rebuy cost of your ship. If you dont and you die you will be back in the sidewinder.

I personally mostly trade and mine for income, but thats most of the basics in my opinion. I could tell you easier ways to make a quick wade of cash, but its better to grind and learn. Owning a bigger ship and not knowing how to really fly it will just get you bigger rebuy bills.

Thiss ^^. This is the fastest way to find your way around the vast galaxy. These are a great group of folks that will help you in a very fun way. You'll cut the learning curve into a tiny piece.
This ^^. T

I would like to throw in that the game gives you a free eagle after you have made your first jump, so if your still in the starter Winder you might want to trade it in

Thank you very much guys!

I'm getting there now and enjoying the game a lot more!

Just sided with Zachary Hudson, and I wanted to head to 9 puppis to help with the expansion..although it won't allow me to plot a route? It just says route unavailable!

Is there a reason for this?

Also, trying to play with a friend yesterday and when we sent each other Wing Requests, none of us could see them?

For the love of God, back out of your contract with Hudson. You REALLY don't want to sign with a Faction until you are well into your career. In fact, there should be a level-wall for Power Play. Trust me, you don't need to do that right now.
Hands down the easiest credits with the least amount of risk for newer players is Rare Commodity Trading.
Do some combat and trading to get yourself a Cobra Mk III. Then look up Rare Commodity Trading. There are loads of places to go to find all kinds of neat stuff. It takes time but it is low-risk, high-reward. By the time you can afford a Cobra for Smuggling and a Type-6 Transport for Trading, you'll be able to afford a Vulture. Then you can kill anything you want, within reason. Also, check out Community Goals. Some are hit or miss, but if you can get into a Bounty Hunting one you will be killing NPC's like normal but with an extra couple million credit bonus at the end of the week.

Good grief man, do as SCScunk says and UN~PLEDGE NOW ! Do maybe at least several weeks play before you even THINK about Power Play, the reason we say this is that nearly all other Power Players will pull to try to kill you.

Hold off another 80k credits and buy a viper mk IV instead of the cobra mk III. Better shields even though it is 1 class lower. Also it is smaller and more maneuverable. You do lose a little in speed and less than 0.25 LY in jump range. A far better deal all around.

I'd like to add a little forgotten tip, go into your controls and turn off the option "yaw into roll". This will hinder you more than help you in the long run if you keep it. Also go into a planetary ring and focus on flying around and orbiting asteroids. This will help getting comfortable using all your thrusters.

UA = Unidentified artefact, usually found randomly in deep space (centred around a particular system typically but I can't remember the name) look a bit like a probe and do damage to your ship if you pick them up similar to toxic waste, and if you check galnet every once in a while you'll see stories pertaining to them damaging stations where they are being researched.
