Tips for getting a fleet carrier?

To all you thousands of people who have fleet carriers - how did you make 5 billion credits? I've gotten about half a billion doing various random things - including a lot of goods trading in a Cutter and a lot of Robigo runs, and plenty of exploring. But it seems that making 5bn would take about another 300 trade runs at least. Is there some other way to make huge amounts of cash that I'm not aware of? Does some form of mining pay better than trading?

Mining, mining and more mining.

Robigo passenger runs seem to pay a lot too these days.
But my personal favourite is and has been mining.
Core or laser, your pick.

Laser is faster.
Aim for a double hot spot, mine platinum and Osmium. Osmium you can hand in for missions for 350k/t, or up to 800k/t for a wing mission.

Just accumulated it over time.

It depends entirely on your personality. Some people can grind straight through and have a great time. Others if they do that will burn out as soon as they get it and quit.

Community goals can be a great way to do it. These days, they often reward substantially better than average, so you can sometimes earn a fleet carrier in a week.

Many commanders got their fleet carrier paid by other rich commanders out there. :)

Just carry on as you are. Hauling etc. Do some smuggling too that's paying well sometimes. There's no rush! You could engineer a few ships to put on the carrier hehe. On foot engineering too.
Like @varonica said...its accumulated over time ideally.
Mining cores is very satisfying and not easy. Laser mining and sub surface/abrasion etc is a doddle you'll earn well quickly.
Not sure what the new meta is but a triple platinum hotspot can't go wrong..

I got mine by doing a mix of massacres missions and mining platinum, that way I didn't get too bored doing the same thing over and over. When mining have a look in the system to see if there's a fleet carrier buying the platinum close to the price you would sell it for anyway, that will save you travel time to go sell it yourself for a small hit in the overall amount you would get in total.

I don´t know anything about credits, but I would say just travel to the Agartha system (because why assume carriers are sold elsewhere), dock at the station, click the buy button. If it´s greyed out, come back when you have enough credits.

...and as stated here, but that depends on how much one´s willing to do for the said CMDR. ;)

I do almost every game loop, I get bored of doing the same thing for more than a few sessions in a row (the only exception being deep black exploration, which I love): as a result, I don't do anything efficiently, or to max out profit per hour.
One day I realised that I had accumulated enough credits to buy a carrier, without really grinding for it. I reckon I started hoarding credits the moment I stopped thinking about them.
It's not a fast method, but my focus has always been enjoying myself first and foremost, so it came as a nice bonus.

As others have said, do what you enjoy most at your own pace: depending on your playstyle it can be quick, or it can be slow but, if you are enjoying the ride, you'll have no regrets.

I was in Colonia for a couple of weeks recently (waiting for patch 11) & tried some platinum laser mining in a metallic ring, selling to a tourist ground base. It was a ridiculously easy way to earn huge amounts of cash.

I got most of my treasure haul from wreaking havoc for 18 months on a medium sized PMF that accidentally encroached on my little empire of dirt & didn't immediately kowtow to my authoratah. More fun that mining, but undeniably slower too.

Try to focus on credits making.
It won't be fast, but if you set certain goals and work to achieve them, it will not take very long either - but overall it's a long term goal.

Just keep in mind that 5 Billions is not enough.
You need about 7 billions, maybe more - you need to install services, and you do need to cover some months of upkeep (just in case)

Robigo runs are paying about 100 millions for the first hour, then it drops a bit due to mission board starvation
Mining platinum in a good ring/hotspot is more productive than Robigo runs
Doing stacked massacre missions (if you have combat skills and a good engineered combat ship) are also very productive. Edtools is of great help here
Trading runs of about 24-25k per ton profit, means like 18-19 millions credits per Cutter run, about 100 millions per hour.

Just remember that missions are paying better if you are allied with the factions.
So you could settle in a system that offers massacre missions to a single destination and work out the rep by doing supply/delivery missions and/or massacre missions.
Alternating them might help avoid burning out.
You can do some research using Edtools and eddb.io and pick a good system (industrial or extraction) with station close to drop off, in a nice neighborhood, with massacre missions all stacked in a small system (dont pick one which offers massacre missions in multi-star systems - you dont want missions at 200,000 ls away from dropoff) - things can progress nicely

I got my first Carrier partly through exploration, heading across the galaxy and back with the Distant Worlds 2 expedition, then using the PowerPlay LYR rank 5 triple-payout bonus before handing in the data. The rest was partly Robigo runs, partly mining.

I got two "assistants" in a Frontier sale while out on DW2 (one for the Bubble and one for Colonia), and I eventually got Carriers for them too, largely through tritium trading.

Mining in a large ship is one way. Platinum mining offers a "stable", but lower "peak" income than Painite, Void Opels and LTDs. Platinum sells at around 250k per ton, while the other three highly depend on the correct combination of system states for "max profits". Personally, I'd go for Platinum mining.

Trade CGs can be very lucrative as well. In the last chapter of the Colonia Bridge CG, I made almost a billion Credits doing 1-jump loops between Alioth and Alcor

Other CGs can throw in some additional money as well. A combat CG with ground combat zones can also pay good money, especially if you reach one of the higher tiers.

For the FC: You need 5 Billion Credits for the Hull alone, plus some additional money for the services you want. That mostly depends on the way you play. For example, if you play alone, you don't need expensive things like Shipyard or Outfitting, since those services are provided to the owner of the FC for free. Depending on your set up, I suggest aiming for ~7b credits for hull, essential services and some spare money for the first few months. Upkeep is not an issue, if you play the game regularily.

Word of advice: don't get sucked into tunnel vision and grinding. If you don't enjoy the activity, do something else for a while. Avoid burn out at all cost.

Last but not least, I expect a picture of your newly commissioned FC in this thread when the time has come

Do trading with other player's carriers. Look up the PTN in particular.

I agree you want around 7 billions, once you know how to make money you will keep doing it.

I switched between the following, and still do :)

Robigo runs

Mining platinum (used to be diamonds, don't get me started )

Doing stacked massacre missions, take a look at Ngalinn - Mainani for a simple version and build a type 10 defender.

Road to riches.

Loads of stuff on YouTube to show you the how.

Good luck
