Newcomer / Intro tips on how to start?

found the fuel scoop. but i don't think im gonna come back to this. Had to go back to that station again. Sitting there staring at a screen for who knows how long. I can't do this. If in a future update they add a way to jump to the stations i'll give it another look.

If you look closely in Outfitting, you will see that fuel scoops come in many sizes. These sizes are denoted by class (a number) and rating (a letter) A is a better rating than B, and 2 is a higher class than 1. The better the fuel scoop, the shorter time it will take to fill your tank. So to alleviate your boredom, you might want to buy a better fuel scoop if possible :)

Fly safe, and good luck!

edit:
I misread your post, sorry. You were irritated by the long travel times, not the fuel scooping.
Turns out that what I said for fuel scooping goes for travel time as well. only this time you will have to get a better frame shift drive.
However, even with the largest frame shift drive fitted, some stations are still very far away, so you will always have some travel time.

travel to stations should only be a matter of a couple of minutes in most systems.

Once you've hyperspaced in, go to left panel and scroll down to the station within the system and lock it

then align your ship with the blue dot in the mini radar screen and go to max throttle

at this point you should be seeing orbit lines for the different planetary bodies and your speed should be climbing into fractions of .C

stations in some systems are less than 100LY from the nav point where you arrive from hyperspace and only take a couple of mins to reach.
there are some in the 10s of thousands of LY and are a PITA to get to, and I avoid them as you can be supercruising for 10-15 mins to reach them, so only go there if a really good reason (big profit or specific kit needed)

once you're cruising to the destination, watch the radar and toggle through the different contacts - look out for any ships behind you as they may try to interdict you and pull you out of super cruise into normal space for combat/piracy.

as you approach the target station, watch the time under the distance - when it reaches about 09s, throttle back and put the line in the blue zone

it should then auto-slow you down until you reach the station, then you hit C to exit super cruise when you get the safe disconnect message pop up at less than 1,000km distance

It really should only be a few mins in most systems.

this is part of the game as avoiding interdictions adds an element of adventure - especially if you're flying a Hauler (space white van) with no shields and crappy laser as you've dumped all unnecessary items to max out cargo and jump distance capacity.

Yup - it's also a chance to investigate unknown signals (lots going on in those), or eye up other NPC ships if you fancy doing a bit of piracy yourself. Stations are only half of a system really - supercruising around and seeing what else there is to do is the other half.

Problem with that is if i'm heading to a station its because i want to be at a station. I've something i need or want to do there and i don't have that short of an attention span that i need to look at every thing i see. Stopping turns a painful 5 minute journey into an even longer one.

And i wouldn't be able to check out of ships even if i wanted to. As some one who still can't stop at a station that isnt moving there is no way im gonna try and catch a moving target.
