Why don't we see any tire tracks?

Probably because, if they were persistent, the storage requirement for them would eventually dwarf everything else. Even if they weren't persistent then they would require data to be stored in the client that created them and transferred to every other client in the instance - increasing data throughput between clients.

I couldn't care less about multiplayer or excuses. From my perspective its a giant elephant in the room. I'm driving around on a surface of a moon and there is no evidence or anything showing where I've been.

Of course that goes with the theme of the entire game. No commander log, no trade history, not even price history from the last station you were at 5 minutes before.

There are some nice statistics thought!

Of course they can count how far you've driven!

Personally I think it would be acceptable to have them persistent (or at least semi-persistent) within an instance. Since all the clients in an instance are rendering the vehicles, they can generate the tracks on the fly (maybe pending a graphics configuration option).

The population of an instance is not fixed - players join and leave as they like - it would be slightly odd for the joining player to see only tracks from the time they joined the instance.

Work on that problem later. For now your own tracks should be visible to you. I want to know if I've been somewhere and since there is no actual MAP in the game (even though yes you've orbited right above the spot you are going) nor any sort of navigational devices in the 33rd century the LEAST they could do would let us see our own tracks.

Are you talking about fully persistent or just immediate area as a graphical boon? If you are thinking about something akin to say bullet holes in a game like Fallout where over time they just disappear and are there for gratification of right now, then yes. If fully persistent, then I can't see how that would be possible.

Bit harsh really? You would rather put up with longer instancing? Tyre tracks are such a small issue for the current game.

I've voted no.
As Richard has said, the storage required for the amount of data would be huge!
For me, I'm not too bothered looking where I have already driven. I'm more excited about where I'm going next.

Maybe a compromise and have them fade out after a few hundred meters.

I'd like my tracks stay persistent for at least 2 miles..

If you boost and get high enough in the air you should be able to see everywhere you've been to. Sometimes you get turned around and if you see your own tracks you know you are headed in the wrong direction. Although yes I can use moons, stars, and the navigational compass as well as the coordinates to get an approximate idea which way to go ..

The bullet holes thing is probably what they'll need to do. It would most likely be local at first. Personally I don't care about seeing other people's tracks but that would be nice to have as well if you are looking for someone and seeing where they went.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

I don't play online specifically because of these issues and the poor choices they made in the network model. If they couldn't make it seamless like every other game out there and when other pilots were jittering around while I'm on a fiber connection and relying on the weakest link for good gameplay I'd rather play offline. That is a whole other debate.

So 1) see our own tracks.. sure they can fade but I'd make it a really long distance. 2) If they can't add other people's tracks .. fine with me. Maybe later they can figure that out. 3) Maybe even further down the line they can figure out how to make them persistent in the universe - wouldn't that be cool to land on a moon and find someone else has been exactly where you were??

Giving the more artistic players among us plenty of scope to write "things" on the surface....

Never even thought of that. You probably have a dirty mind though :) Even if someone did do that, who cares. I wouldn't be able to get high enough to see it most likely.

If it was a choice between my own tyre tracks being visible only to me or no-one's tyre tracks being visible to anyone, I would take the first option without hesitation.

The number of people voting NO is a microcosm of the issue here. How can anyone here vote against a new feature that would add to the realism? You can see the nuts coming out to play. Seriously - its like these people who are the unwavering fanboys could be given the keys to a brand new Mercedes and they would refuse to take it because they are fans of Ford. That is the mentality of some of the most fervent fanboys in this game.

Tracks are necessary.

Some very easy solutions :
  1. In bases let's make some static ones to give use impression that we are not alone.
  2. Non persistant SRV tracks in other locations : let them vanish after 60 seconds

Calculating, storing and rendering tyre tracks would add to the graphical workload when on the surface.
