I think there is a bit more to it than that. I think that Frontier perhaps by accident has created the perfect FOMO machine.
The last update included the ability to kill Titans, we had no way of knowing that. Taranis was already weak and it was attacked from the start so things happened quite quickly.
Frontier then revealed that they had an elaborate loot systems for killing the titans and that each kill would yield unique loot. They also mentioned that the loot would get better and better. It LOOKED like the loot might work in the way we now know it does, but you know Frontiers track record with wording. Honestly I wasn't sure until Leigong went down.
Frontier then had to specify the timeframe you needed to be within to get valid bonds, one week. Soon after Taranis went down and I am pretty sure some people got caught out.
Now we know what the rules are: You are only going to get the rewards for participating in this TWO YEAR LONG story arc if you are playing the week each and every titan goes down. No, you have no way of knowing when these weeks are going to happen. Yes, it will happen over the summer vacation. No, you have no way of knowing what the rewards are so you can determine if you think it's worth it. Yes, you will loose rewards from the "shiny end" if you miss a titan.
I do think Frontier were quick to point us in the direction of dying Taranis. I also think it's good that they have rewarded people for just being in the Taranis and Leigong systems since open is bugged. But I also think that this way of rewarding players is likely to cause more hostility than it had to.
There will certainly be people who feel that because of events beyond their control they miss out on the "best" rewards for participating in this very long war. Stuff like illness, travel, technical issues.
There will also be people who buy into the FOMO and watch the titans like hawks planning socially around the kills. They are likely to afterwards be angry that they rewards do not live up to their expectations.
I mean, you're welcome to think what you want and speak for yourself but it doesn't mean that you're right about it. And if you put as much time into looking at what is happening as spinning a concern yarn you'd might find that a lot of your presumptions are incorrect.I seem unable to get my point across so I will try to narrow it down more:
This is in Elite Dangerous terms an important and long-running story arc. For the grand finale the game sets you certain tasks.
The tasks are not skill-based. The gameloop in question is quite simple.
The tasks are not based on cooperation. In fact it is much more difficult to complete them in open. For you nit-picky types: Yes you can complete them in private groups but the point still stands.
The tasks are not grind based either. You can't just brute force them when you have time.
The tasks are in fact more luck-based. You need to be able to log on and play during 8 one-week periods that occur due to events beyond your control. Again for you nit-picky types, I am aware that a single run is enough but the point still stands.
What is my point?
1: This is more complex than "noob/scrub/lazy players just want free rewards"
2: This is a game design that is probably quite likely to cause players who are invested in the game to become upset.
What is the solution? Possibly provide more ways to complete the tasks that are grind or skillbased.
I do not have any horses in this race personally. I am just making an observation on human nature and game design.
God's speed commanders, and good night.
At the end of the day it's a game, I'd consider myself invested in it, being a kickstarter backer and have been playing since just after Horizons dropped, but I'm not seeing the validity of your criticism. It really isn't a tough trick for anyone to ensure they get the rewards if they really wanted to.
However, I would certainly feel that you would have more cause to complain if you had pledged thousands of dollars to a game and also a ship that was meant to be exclusive, and had to wait several years for it to appear in the game, but then when it did turn up as part of a CG most who paid for the ship never got to experience their first look at it due to constant technical issues etc... But then that's not Frontier we're talking about there, are we?
