To all casual/mediocre/jack of all trades players out there like me: good setup inside!

So, if you are like me and you don't enjoy grinding but you like to do whatever the game throws at you without planning, I hope I can give you good suggestions.

I usually hunt elite anacondas, while doing some rare commodities runs and occasionally leave for the 1000 ly exploring trip once in a while (just came back from Witch Head nebula).
My ideal ships are obviously multitasking ships like the Cobra, Asp or Python, but I really dislike grinding to keep up with the maintenance costs of the big ships.
After trying extensively the Viper, Cobra and Asp, I came to the conclusion that due to my playstile and current scaling mechanics, my ideal ship is the Cobra.

My loadout:
Dual C1 pulses
Dual C2 multis
Dual B2 shield cell banks (which I switch with scanners when I leave to explore)
C4 power plant
A4 thrusters
A3 distributor
D3 sensors
D3 life support
A4 shield generator
20 slots of cargo (E4 + E2)

This loadout (aside from the scanners) costs a little bit more than 6,2 millions and has an insurance of 310k, which is exactly the same amount I make when I do a 20t rare trade run (ie: the Lave-Zeessze run).
It takes little time to fill up the cargo, it never takes me more than 5 minutes to destroy elite anacondas, and I have a very respectable 20.00 ly jump range (a bit more without the banks). Also, I boost at 433 m/s which is awesome compared to Asps and Pythons.

As I'm a casual and mediocre player which often does mistakes and explodes, and I really hate grinding, I don't like the fact that if I'm in a similarly efficient Asp build (mostly D rank) my insurance costs skyrocket to almost a million, meaning that if I die, it takes me three times the time it takes me in my Cobra to recollect the money I just lost. If I die in my Cobra, I'll have my money back with a single 20t rare run, which takes less than 10 minutes, or a couple of anaconda hunts. You can't sustain an Asp with just bounties and rare runs (well you can, but it takes a long time to fill up the cargo hold).

I don't know if FD will change the scaling or introduce new income producing methods that can support the more expensive ships without the grind, but if you are like me and enjoy doing everything without excelling in anything, I believe right now my loadout is almost optimal and for sure the most sustainable without sacrificing anything.
I hope this information can help some other casual like me! :)

Can you send me the cash to buy this as the insurance alone is more than my credit score. It sounds like good fun though! :)

Great ideas ---I parked my cobra for a viper to improve my combat skills --- have been recently thinking about going back to it ----I want to be sure to have enough credits to properly outfit first though

My Adder is ideal for my Space Bum lifestyle. I do a bit of everything whilst randomly traveling between stars. If I find myself getting bored of one thing I swap out to the next.
I have a 15ly jump range, and am currently running with a class 1 beam laser and class 2 multicannon (the other class one spot is filled with a mining laser) then depending on what I'm up to I will swap out modules for either exploration (scanners) trading (all cargo space) fighting (shield bank) mining (at least a 3 bay refinery) etc etc. I don't make a ton of credits but I have a lot of fun.

Keep in mind the main "sale point" of my build is the C4 power plant, which costs a fraction of the A4 one while allowing you to power everything in my setup. You HAVE to use pulse lasers, as burst lasers already require too much power.
If you switch to the B4 plant, you spend more and increase your weight by a lot, if you switch to the A4, you can use other beam weapons but your price goes from 6.2 mln to almost 8 mln and your insurance goes from 310k to 400k.

What I really like of my build is the fact that if I die, I can get the money back just doing 20t of rare trade, which takes 10 minutes with no waiting time for the stations to restock (I usually buy in Leesti and Uszaa or Zeessze and George Pantazis).
It feels like it's self sustainable, if you know what I mean.
I'm not seeing myself going further than the Cobra unless FD implements some alternatives to trading to maintain the big ships, as I really dislike repetitive tasks.

That's exactly what I mean. Having 20 mln credits myself, I tried to find out the break even without considering repetitive trading, and I think the Cobra is exactly at that point, with a minimum margin of profit. Bigger ships will require trading for maintenance and high rank subsystems.
The Adder is like the Cobra's little brother.
By the way, do you manage to kill elite anacondas with it?

I've only killed one Anaconda (wanted, Nav Beacon) but only by using the police as back-up (turn on report crimes, take a hit, stay out of attack range for 5 mins until the feds show up, restart the attack once help arrives). If I'm on my own I can take a Python but sometimes it takes so long I'd be better off letting them go and picking on a more suitable target.

I also let Criminals go if their bounty is less than 1k. I've seen plenty of bounty hunters with 200cr on their heads from accidentally shooting friendly/neutral ships, I let these guys go about their business even though I don't always get the same treatment in return...

Yeah I guessed so, it looks like the Viper is the less expensive ship able to destroy elite anacondas efficiently (without counting weird setups like 3x dumbfires Eagles).
