To Boldly Go

Hey all, I'm a very new Elite player (I just started 2 days ago) and, as an avid Star Trek fan, there is nothing more in this game that I would like more than to be to the person who discovers a whole new system, the person who travels the furthest ever travelled in this game. I understand that exploration of the outer reaches of space requires a ship much more suited to the task than my starter ship, and I understand that I will need tons of resources and upgrades. After playing this game for nearly 16 hours already, I'd really appreciate it if somebody was able to point me in the general direction I should go next to be able to accomplish my goal in the near future.

Go shoot some rocks.

Really, that's it.

Hope that is general enough for you :D

Actually, without being flippant, the best thing you can do without the rox is start doing missions for a bit, then get a hauler, and buy the scannery thing. It won't take you much money to do that.

Use profits from exploring local systems to invest in a DBX or even an Asp. It'll take you less time than you think (well, compared to ye olden days). Kit it out. You can easily go exploring in that and do a great job.

The only real engineering upgrade that you 'need' would be the FSD one from Farseer or Martuuk, and they are as easy as pie to unlock. Anything else helps but is not a big deal. I'd do that Guardian FSD booster.

If exploring is your game, then that's the way I would go.

I've got a lovely Jumpaconda that I spent ages maxing etc and getting all the engineers unlocked. But I had most fun exploring in an Asp.

Oh yeah, if you want to be the person who travelled the furthest in the game, good luck with that, you've got severe competition in that regard and they've got kinda a big headstart on you. You could always find Raxxla, like I have.;)

Better get cracking :)

On Inara (a popular third party site many of us use) the top-ranked commander in distance flown is that Vonricthofen chap and he's on 8,024,310 light years flown. And not every commander is on there either. Who is the commander that posted a screenshot of his route around the entire map? That bloke's been everywhere.

So while I admire your enthusiasm, you've quite the hill to climb and the peak gets taller all the time. A goal or purpose in Elite is gold, so you're off to a good start.

So make some money, pick your favorite exploration ship, outfit it as you see fit and set sail. You're about to peel back one hell of an onion.

Welcome to Elite commander.

As of right now, the ship I'm aiming for is the Diamondback Explorer, which, if I saw the cost right, is only 1.8 million CR. It's probably not the best exploration ship out there, but it's one within reach as of right now, and the increased cargo hold and speed of travel will help me gain CR faster in the future. I'd definitely love to get an Anaconda in the future, but for right now, that cost is simply unattainable. I've just been running a ton of deliveries between local systems, but I hope to get out into the unknown soon

Maybe for now, I can start doing some low scale exploration first, by just flying to the outskirts of civilized space, just within range of a nearby station to re fuel

Also, as a side note , I just want to make sure that the Diamondback explorer is an okay starter exploration ship. I noticed that it's a bit bulky, which isn't really my type of ship, but that doesn't really matter as much when it comes to exploring the galaxy.

Thanks,

Elun

No, it's a very good ship, and I like it - its got it's own character. Plus it's got a big fuel tank. You certainly won't regret it.

Asp for me is the real deal though, could stop at that and forget about an Annie.

But, it's easier getting an Annie than you think, and as you need it for exploration, you don't need stacks of A modules.

Great! I'm very close to getting the Diamondback already, so I'll use that to start out before I begin work on getting the Annie or an Asp

Hehe, I've been running missions non stop, planning them out so I can run around 4 contracts at a time. The Diamondback only costs 1.8 million CR, right?

Also, as a side note , I just want to make sure that the Diamondback explorer is an okay starter exploration ship.

Don't let the looks fool you. It's more than just a good starter ship, it's one of the best long-range ships in the game. I have one that jumps over 70 light years and that gobbles up the space miles in a hurry. It may not be able to pack every bell and whistle due to more limited optional internal space than it's competitors, but it's a serious exploration ship that can carry you far, literally and figuratively. An excellent choice.

Great! Once I get it, I'll buy all the upgrades I can, a fuel scoop, and a scanner. Then I'm done with all the delivery services for good

Yeah, you need a scoop. Stations can be seen in your left panel, under navigation, hit 1 if on PC. Which system are you in?
