To FD. Advice on setting up Frontier account for PS4 launch?

Hey now, you all talking like this is common practice. This will be the first game I've owned on PS4 (perhaps all Playstations) where having a separate account is mandatory. Oi.

Ok, next dumb question - I signed up here to be chatting with all you gents (and gals), does that mean I'm signed up for Frontier in general?

actually not so dumb question, would be nice to know. now i feel like the class dunce *sits in dunce's corner*

Nope, goto www.frontierstore.net and create an account there, you can then link it when you first fire up Elite Dangerous on PS4.

Surely ED will remember my username / password after first play, yes?

On serious note though the more checks and balances in place, the better for me.

What you call checks and balances, I call points of failure and attack vectors for identity theft and DDoS attacks. I'm assuming Frontier is going to want my real identity. Please tell me they do not ask for a credit card.

Its only a one time sign in indeed.. Though it will be practical NOT to forgot your username and password.

On xboxone we dont need a credit card, because you dont need it on XboxOne. there are more payment options.

I assume this will be the same on PS4, you can buy frontier points with PS gift cards, or maybe local payment methods..

Excellent! I'm guessing the need for a Frontier account at all is due to the platform-agnostic BGS. Hats off to Mr. Cynical for the OP, because I had no idea (as Monkey said, I slept through that particular class).

Hold the train, I'm confused! Do I need to set up a Frontier account to play this game on the PS4? I'm a PSN Plus subscriber, shouldn't that be enough?

I'd concur that one shouldn't need an FD account because, the end user of any product never goes to first party for resolve unless under contract to do so. Although generally speaking, anyone approved can have an FD account, there would be no reason for the end user of a product offered by Sony to do so. Any and all transactions or other issues related to game play on an PS4 have to go through Sony! Hence Sony has to deal with any and all issues, related to the game, not FD. Should they have issues, they by contract go to FD for resolve, not the end user.

One can purchase psn cards through "Amazon" ( a third party), one must have an account with Amazon to do so. Should one have issues related to said card, one must seek resolve with Amazon not Sony.

Another Example: Should one have issues with a new car, one has to deal with the dealer, not the manufacture. FD can offer various incentives, that Sony doesn't and vice versa. Just like buying a new car, any and all issues are the responsibility of the dealer, not the manufacture. Should the dealer have issues, they go to the manufacture, not the end user.

Then again, I'm an old retired U.S.A. bussiness man; Subsequently, not being a Brit or Aussie nor a millennial, my logic is different. So, I maybe incorrect.

I think he is taking different pills. :)

Bill, FDev have the responsibility for the game. Sony have the responsibility to let you buy it, and download it and that PSN works. You wouldn't report bugs to Sony. PSN and FDev server interaction wont be an issue for the end user unless PSN goes down, then we are all unhappy bunnies.

You'll create your FD Account (Like having ubisoft uplay, rockstar id, EA login etc etc) in the game, and job done, you'll blaze your own trail.

Guys seriously listen to dusty here I have no idea which email etc I used when singing into ED for the first time (around two years ago) so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't become an issue.

Never heard of any of these people. Ok, I jest, though I don't play any of their games. What you're saying is this "separate account to play a game" thing is more common than my experience has led me to believe? Out of curiosity, are these mandatory or optional? I play games with optional accounts which provide additional (though minimal) features, like stats available via the web, but none are mandatory. Again, no big deal that ED requires this, it just caught me off guard.

You can create a Frontier account in advance, however you can't link to it until the game is released. Connecting to an existing account will still create a new PS4 commander save - you cannot transfer an existing commander.

Cheers Mike
I'll be setting that up when I get home then.

I suggest you all do the same (but don't forget the email and password used) so you're good to go when you begin your new life in the 34th century :)

Actually I can't 100% remember, I think they are usually optional (I know Ubisoft [Assassins Creed] and Rockstar [Grand Theft Auto] were both optional for tracking your progress on their sites. EA [Dragon Age: Inquisition Mass Effect 2/3] I am not quite sure if you had to register for online play). So Elite Dangerous may be setting a new precedent?

Mass Effect, I forgot they are EA! I just have to state for the record that I have played ME 2&3 :D

I started to write that ED is probably requiring registration to access the BGS, but then it dawned on me that NMS has a "BGS" of a sorts, and I believe it's cross-platform and yet does not require registration. Hmmm.

How, when, where - more details please?

https://www.frontierstore.net/customer/account/create/

I'm just suggesting this now to avoid any potential issues on launch day, when lots of buyers try to set up their frontier accounts to play the game. May as well do it beforehand as one less thing that can go wrong. o7

I will use the same one as my xbox account first, and then the spare one i set up earlier in case i need it.

You need the Frontier account for your commander save (all your CMDR progress stats * are in Frontiers servers, not PSN).

The account requires first name, last name, and email address only, from memory. So long as it's a valid email, you can put whatever you like for first and last name.

If you are worried about it, you only need to enter a credit card, if you are buying from the store, and you won't be doing that on the PS4, that'll be all through the PlayStation Store, I would imagine. (I'd like to think that Frontier would offer a Lifetime Expansion Pass for the PS4, but I reckon Sony won't like that - at least if I ever move back to playing on the PC, my LEP on that platform will still be valid.)

* and I believe the log of everything your commander has done, so if you lose your ship to a bug, Frontier can confirm what you were doing at the time, etc , for working out the nature of the bug

So it's safe to use my account that linked to pc version then?
it wont effect anything to do with my pc version of the game?
