To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

I so wish there was only open.
I love the game, I know there are people in system but I never see them.

I don't want to play alone, but I do.. open can be a lonely place.

I have a new two seater scorpion, I never see anyone to share it with.

Large ship has 4 seats, again to remain empty.

I know people in game, but everyone is either pg or solo

Indeed. Not all players share that wish.

I expect that many players love the game - as it is, not as it might be if it was changed to suit a particular play-style preference. Players may not instance with other players for a number of reasons (matchmaking, block list, choice of game mode) - the last two being their choice.

The size of the galaxy guarantees that the vast majority of it is devoid of other players. Notable exceptions are some systems where Engineers reside and CG systems.

That's their choice - and they can't be forced to play in Open.

Can't you get those people you know to add you to their PG?

Open isn't really empty because of people not being there, it's just the fact that the galaxy has a zillion star systems per player. Organisation is usually needed to meet anyone at all.

Hmm lets say I do allow someone on co-pilot seat of my Cutter. Now I'm closing in on station, how can I be sure that my co-pilot does not activate weapons and fire at station?

There was actually someone boasting about doing things like that in this forum a couple of years ago.

One of the more low key annoyances from the same individual was letting off all the heat sinks at once, then trying to overheat the ship.

It's always necessary to be careful about who you choose to play with.

Yeah, name&shame should be allowed against trolls.

I'm under the impression that a lot of people, including myself, prefer to play Solo mode all the time, not because we don't want to play with others, but simply because we don't want to PVP others.

For comparison, let me talk to you about of one of the worst launches in recent years, Fallout 76, which to the surprise of some has actually redeemed itself (at least to some extent), but owes it survival to its community, which stood during awful first year fo the game, but also a community that confused Bethesda because the devs were convinced their players wanted more PVP... and they were proven wrong, best depicted through many of the ironic headlines that gaming journalism used to deliver the "shocking" revelation:

Back to Elite Dangerous, I think a lot more people would like to try playing in Open Play with random strangers in Elite if they had the choice to opt out from PVP, like having an aforementioned pacifist mode that disabled PVP interactions.

But that's just my impression, and I would like to hear what other thinks on this matter:

Do you think that Open Play would be negatively affected if PVP could be disabled?

Do you think Elite could benefit from having more people try to play & cooperate with others in Open Play?
Yes, absolutely I would. The only reason I don't play in open mode is griefers that would gang up on me in certain systems and send me to the scrap heap. PVP has it's place, but only if people can chose to engage with it.

I used to not care, until I started trying Open for the last week or so.

Has been the most miserable experience I've ever had in Elite. I was out in Maia but as soon as I came back to the main Bubble, I was getting constantly ganked by 2-3 man teams, all of which would spam insults at me once I respawned after rebuy.

And every time it was when I had a completely empty cargo hold, and they would open fire without any warning. It is not enjoyable whatsoever.

I'm not saying they should change the game structure, but there's a reason I stayed in Private sessions or Solo for so long.

If only these people would realise that they are slowly turning Open into their private shadow server. And once they are done, they'll get bored to death and move on. Next game, next cornfield...
Today was especially strange when I jumped into the headquarter system of a federal Power I was allied with. I'm new to Powerplay and expected relative safety at the Prime system of the Power I was pledged to.

Empty cargo hold, no notoriety or bounties. Still got interdicted into a 2v1 gank, one of whom was throwing repair limpets at their buddy.

I'm gonna need to revise my engineering obviously since I have G3-G5 engineering for survivability on basically everything, but I still got my shield wiped and my hull shredded before I could high wake out.

It's called PVE and you can do that in private groups Mobius comes to mind.
We can - however it still relies on trust (that all members will abide by the Private Groups' out-of-game rules), finding out about PvE PGs is an out of game exercise, and PGs have a membership limit.

If Frontier were to remove the membership limit and advertise PGs on the launcher that would go some way to remedy the problem.

let me guess after you died in Maia you flew straight to Deciat?

Could you perhaps post your ship build here? I am very interested in it for compare reasons to my own shipbuilds.

The ability to avoid griefing is what keeps a lot of us from moving to Star Citizen. I disliked their PvP set-up immensely, even if the game was superior in many ways (Ship interiors! EVA! Proper Multicrew! Salvage! Atmospheric flight!). Keeping the Solo or PG options is the only thing this game still has going for it, but they are going to have to catch up on a lot of other avenues for that to keep holding out for long.

SC will likely end up with a lower risk mode and/or more low/no risk areas by the time it launches. (If it ever does) Too many gankers is bad for business. They are supposed to be the spice, but just end up the poison.

They bring it on themselves.
