To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

You're victimizing yourself. I hope dying in a videogame was the worst thing that happened to you throughout your time in Elite.

No, I just play the game the way I want to play it, harming nobody, and gaming is my down time to relax - not my "who has the biggest willy" time. I'm an explorer, and generally fly without guns or shields. No challenge to anyone.

The "victim blaming" comes when people say I should alter that playstyle to fit into their sociopathic style of play.

Like it's my fault that they are like that. "Look what you made me do!"

It's pathetic.

I'll try to explain:

There are (at least) two reasons a place could be dangerous:

1. Because it makes sense from an in game perspective (civil war, leading criminal factions, etc)

2. Because it's a popular place and from a perspective outside of the game it's easy to meet people you can blow up.

For someone who isn't that much interested in PvP it doesn't make much sense to get blown up at some ancient ruins. The only reason why the place is dangerous is because it's popular and not because it's dangerous within the game world.
Oh, right. I guess that's what happens when npcs are your average run-of-the-mill nobodies, that are mostly there to die, while cmdrs can single handedly win political wars spanning multiple star systems, with minimal effort. The universe kinda revolves around us, despite what the game would want you to believe.

Plenty could be done (and already is in other games) to make the C&P system achieve effectively safe areas where even PvP attacks would carry significant risks for the attacker and virtually no consequences for the victim, and could also give rise to emergent PvP bounty hunting that's actually worth doing.

There is already nearly zero risk and consequences for the "victim" as things stand now. If they are willing to use their brains, that is.

As for the @OP: give crybabies a godmode button so that more NPC level players can fly around in paperplanes in Open and sacrifice all the remaining emergent gameplay in the process?

Thanks but no thanks.

I really wish you had avoided that word 'sociopath' - it's just not applicable in a video game, especially when you select open mode of your own accord, and can't see that the attacking player is just 'playing the game'.
Having said that, I do agree with your points about the C&P system.

To me, it's self-evident. People who do this, whether in real life, or in an immersive computer game like E: D, are sociopaths. Maybe people don't like the word, but then maybe the truth hurts. 🤷‍♀️

Especially given the amount of victim blaming and 'git gud' nonsense you see constantly on here.

PvP should always be consensual. And playing in Open is not a consent to PvP. Otherwise there's no challenge whatsoever for the attacker, and it just annoys the victim. Where is the fun for either party here?

I'm a trader, I have guns and shields as I expect to be attacked by pirates, (though this never actually happens, they all seem to be more interested in miners) it also means I keep an eye on where traffic is concentrating knowing it will likely attract gankers and thus be somewhere to avoid or take precautions.

Or maybe you are just wrong? Hmmm no, not maybe.

There is no victim blaming without, you know, actual victims. And no, losing pixels in a video game does not make you a victim. Also, it absolutely makes sense to say "git gud" in the context of a video game in which you can actually get good, which in turn is absolutely going to affect the outcome of player encounters.

PvP should always be consensual. Otherwise there's no challenge whatsoever for the attacker, and it just annoys the victim. Where is the fun for either party here?

Once you've clicked the 'Open' button, PvP is exactly as consensual as it needs to be.

All my coop experiences in Elite are with people I never met before, in Open, and they are were quite good. I could not have that experience in PG because I would not have met these people. The argument remains invalid, unless you can improve it.
Well, if we are at anecdote level, this might take a while. All my coop experience in Elite are with people I knew from forums or discord, in PG, and they were quite good. I could not have that experience in Open because I would not have trusted these people. Your argument remains invalid, unless you can improve it.
