To some of my fellow imperial Commanders, what's wrong with you??

I don't mean by appearances alone. I mean by personality and ambition, the two of them (Galcian of Skies of Arcadia and Patreus here) are alike.

He doesn't want money or wealth. He wants power. Authority. He's ambitious, skilled, and charismatic. It is still entirely possible that he was behind the attempt on the Emperor's life, but even so, it doesn't change the above statement. If Patreus gets the throne, I guarantee you the Empire will expand. Greatly. We may even go from a cold war with the Federation to a full blown shooting war. He is a war hawk the likes of which we haven't seen in centuries.

But would that be something you would support - or do you just follow where the credits go anyways?

In the event of a real war, my side goes with the regular people caught up in the mess. I'm no lover of war, so no, I will not support Patreus directly in that effort. I supported his effort not long ago to combat piracy, but I do not support his crooked manipulating of debts owed by entire systems. Patreus is best as a military commander, not as head-of-state. As far as who I support, it's anyone who can claim the throne who isn't Aisling or Patreus. Again, Aisling is either too treacherous or too airheaded to rule, and Patreus too ambitious.

We live in an interesting time. The Federation is led by a president that the people despise following the disastrous war in Lugh and will remove from power at the soonest opportunity. The Alliance seems to be doing nothing except growing their local economies, though pirates rule their prosperous systems near Lave. The Empire's political strains are plain as day. Times like this have been when powers rise and fall rapidly in human history. The great World Wars of ancient days arose from such troubling times.

I think you are correct. Both Federation and Empire are facing internal power struggles, as well as eying up each other. This is a very dangerous situation. Neither side can afford a war if it comes during their moment of political upheaval.
