To the 40 passengers that died in my Beluga "sorry about that"

Been back for a couple of weeks after years off.
Trying to make enough for a carrier.
Thought I might do some passenger runs. Fitted a Beluga I had and went out to Ceos. (playing in solo)
Picked up 8 missions, all around 1 million each, about 40 passengers.
Headed to some tourist site in Sothis (all passengers wanted to see the same place).
Scanned the beacon, then I get the message "your ship is being scanned"
I remembered that a lot of passengers dont like being scanned and you can fail missions for that.
I thought Ha, I engineered the ship to be cool and I have heatsinks.
So I immediately went silent.
Apparently the scanning ship didnt like that and opened fire. I hit the super cruise button but didnt even get close. I was dead about 5 seconds after it/they opened fire.
So, to the families of those 40 passengers "sorry bout that" and if your looking to cruise on one of the top 1% of ships out there, dont hesitate, book now.

I believe that canonically passengers always get into escape pods before the ship is destroyed. (This isn't visually depicted in the game, but I believe some messages indicate this to be the case.)

I once accidentally took a passenger who was a criminal, and at the target port security scanned me and started immediately shooting and I got destroyed in seconds. I then got a message from the passenger about lousy service. I suppose that was a 1-star rating for me.

After the rebuy I went to Robigo to try again. This time I was so anxious to scan the beacon and get out fast that I hit the nav beacon at speed. Lost half my health. The passengers were none too happy. I told them, you should have been on the last cruise :) When I got back one of them got off as soon as I docked (failed mission).

'd really like to see a rep system for Passenger missions: Where you can chase non payers across the galaxy and kill them. When you get high "hunt defaulting passenger rep", you never lose a passenger, they always pay, and they never complain but you get a slightly smaller payment per mission.

Hilarious anecdote. I have to wonder about the mentality of wanted criminals who choose to go on sightseeing expeditions in jurisdictions where a target has been painted on their heads.
I would say they’re thrill seekers but then they shouldn’t complain when scanned.

I have also wondered about this mechanic - does the ship scanning you have to complete the scan or does it just have to initiate it for those idiots to get annoyed? (However they even have a clue that the ship is getting scanned because that’s only a thing the pilot should know about.)

Doesn't seem that much of a stretch to suppose that handheld devices capable of picking up ship scans exist as consumer items. I've never done enough transportation of naughty passengers to work out if the scan has to complete in order for them to get miffed. Passengers are pretty irritating to transport in the first place, wanted passengers more so by at least an order of magnitude.

I hit silent running (does that not stop scans anymore?) and was about to pop a heatsink when I exploded :)
Depends how close they are I think.

It probably wasn’t you they were shooting at, some or more of your passengers were probably criminals.

I used to do it a bit 4 years ago. The scan had to be completed for the passengers to get upset. Going silent always worked in the past. The rules may have changed since then or I was just unlucky.

Toggling hardpoints used to break scan in the past.
Goin silent / using heatsinks depends on the distance, if they're really close it may not break the scan.

But maybe they change that cause i dont really remember to get shot at for going silent (but maybe they actually finished the scan BEFORE you gone silent?)

Positioning matters also; there is a distance below which sensors—and therefore scanners, of course—continue functioning despite lacking emissions, presumably based on the typical emission range but usually around 500 meters.

An assured way to interrupt such a scan is to boost past the ship performing it; Commanders know to hold the scanner active to keep some of its progress, but pirates and system forces have to restart it. Consider also armour and chaff!

Yes, and when they get on our ship somehow we get immediate notification we have a criminal on board(?). When we reach a port, why can't the cmdr collect a reward for handing in a known criminal?

You know what, that would actually be a pretty cool alternate way of completing such missions. Kind of like the lawful mirror to those messages you get from slavers when carrying passengers. I always turn those down, but I would happily hand in a criminal.

Because the authorities consider you an accessory aiding and abetting the criminal trying to escape on your ship.
