Why does this happen sometimes even though I am below the blue zone?
I enter Orbital and on way to surf. I do not exceed 130km/s as in this case . Even then it happens!
By the way, lets do away with the glide entirely and lets just have OC and then choose your own speed to planet Surface.
If going too fast then ship damage.
Also quite annoying if you are in Glide and want to reenter OC then you cant without going to normal space.
This is quite an aged mechanics and should be reworked.
personally i quite like the orbital glide mechanics.. .that said i would not mind the part of your suggestion where you get damage if you manage to kludge it up somehow. Perhaps the atmosphere is too thin on the planets we can land on, but if we ever got to land on thicker atmosphere planets, i would love it if we could bounce off if too narrow an angle or burn up if we get it otherwise wrong.
i must say as a positive for planetary landing... i love the effect gravity has. even 4 pipps to shields i have been struggling with 1 planet i was trading with recently (no wonder locally it was the only one with a massive supply of the metals i needed). in around 20 landings in my T9 i had a number of severe damage landings and 1 where i flat out blew up (didnt switch in 4 pipps to shields fast enough).
the only way i could land without smacking the deck was deploying landing gear the moment i dropped out of cruise then 4 pipps to engines and even then it was touch and go.
take off was also fun. with only 2 pipps on engines she could barely take off..... 4 pipps not so bad.
