Too hard to read text with the Oculus Rift DK2

I tried Elite: Dangerous yesterday for the first time, as I have just gotten my Oculus Rift DK2. Those two definitely go hand in hand. :) But while the game itself is great with the DK2, I find it very hard to read the menus in the cockpit. I've only used the tutorials, though, and only up to the Travel-tutorial. Still trying to figure out how to finish it.

I play the game with pre-set High or Medium, but neither works. Or they both work, technically, but I can't read the text in either of them in the cockpit. I can read the text in the main menu and loadscreens, though.

try adding a custom resolution to your rift of 2560x1440 (i do this in the nvidia control panel)

then in elite select this resolution and turn OFF anti-aliasing.

this makes the rift down-scale to 1920x1080 and everything gets clearer.

Make sure you are looking through the rift's "sweet spot" or else it will be blurry. Text should be fuzzy but not that hard to read. One method I've found that also helps is if you move your head slowly while looking at the text it will become more clear since the screen door effect is less pronounced due to the motion.

Not just limited to Rift.
Having the same issue with 1280x720 on my 24" monitor. Numbers for missions (eg: 6 Gold) in the left panel really require you to lean forward and stare (looks like an 8).

Personally, a global GUI font scale float multiplier would be ideal, available in the options menu.

This seemed to help me. Thanks for the tip.

I tried this and although the rift screen does not complain the game just seems to go on and off screen after I change the resolution in game. Any ideas?

yep, I bet you left the Nvidia Control Panel open, then you get this lost focus effect. Close the panel and it will be OK.

Running on high settings, I switched off bloom and maxed out the SMAA? and text is fairly clear. It's not as sharp as outside the rift and I'm not sure that's even possible but it's readable. I don't know how much the bloom impacted anything either but it seemed to help getting all that glare out of the cockpit.

On the oculus configuration utility, do the measurements in the DK1 way. FOV will be slightly larger.
By my side I also don't have the out of focus view after long time playing.

DK2 WAY; they tell you to look at the line and move it away, The DK1 WAY; You have to look straight ahead and move the line away.

REMEMBER: The IPD will slightly change and you will have to update it in the Settings.xml file

Free to try

Or you can do what I did and have it professionally measured. Both the DK1 and DK2 methods were off by a few millimeters. When I set both the config tool and xml file with my actual IPD, everything was so much better.

Due to the pixel density of the Rift, the text font, and the text color, text in E: D is still hard to read when you try to look directly at it. Try moving your head to the left or right, and use your peripheral vision to read it. It's actually much "clearer". The actual reason is that our brain can interpret the text much better using this method as we are not looking directly at the imperfections.

The reason for that, is because when our brains were evolving, we had to watch out for predators that would often strike the side. If you're ever out camping, do the same thing at night. You will be able to see movement and details better than if you looked straight at it. I use this "technique" when the power goes out in my house and I am downstairs in my man-cave.

So this is a thread at Reddit, that gives you a lot of great information. So much that I am looking to go out and purchase aan OR DK2. or should I wait a couple weeks for the next best thing........

Nah...

Change the GUI colour in the file graphicsconfiguration.xml to a green colour.
eg, find the nodes GraphicsConfig/GUIColor/Default and change these 3 nodes below.

<MatrixRed> 0, 1, 0 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 0, 0, 0 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 1, 0, 0 </MatrixBlue>

Solid green for text is very clear versus any other colour on the DK2

Why not simply lean towards the panels like you would in the real world?

I asked this in another thread, but it was a bit off-topic there...

Could it somehow be possible to add a sorta screen-protector to the screen inside the rift... to add a very small amount of blur to the screen?

If the pixels were blurred a tiny bit, juuuust enough that it extended over the lines between the pixels... would that help with fix the screen door effect?

Also, could such a blur help with the chromatic aberration that I've seen in pictures by merging (via blur) the colours in the PenTile matrix, thus creating a more "merged" version of the RGB that the matrix outputs, prior to it being squirted through the magnifier?
