In-Development [Tool] SRV Wave Scanner Object Identifier

I've updated the scanner. It will now save your last selection of checkboxes, avoiding having to re-check everything after a browser refresh.

I was going to post a thread with screenshots, but this is sooooo much better. Well done.

Only thing arguably missing - the "finger" style ghost contacts. Initially I thought these meant nothing, but some Cmdr (sorry, don't have the name) suggested they're very distant contacts. And after following many of them I think he's right. The best way of finding something on the surface is by following those contacts until they resolve into one of the above.*

It might also be useful to add early or long distance variants of the above. For instance you show the barnacle signature, but by the time it appears that well defined in your scanner you can probably already see it yourself. If searching for "high band" contacts, I always look out for any tiny horizontal dashes in the mid-to-top of the scanner, they're often the first sign of the ghost signals resolving into a POI.

(* with exceptions. I was following one of these ghosts which was becoming steadily stronger and more regular, then suddenly disappeared. When I rolled back a few metres, the signal came back; forward again and it disappeared. Either that's a bug, or some POI failed to spawn, or the ghost contacts don't always lead to something useful).

Nicely done Cmdr! <oo7>

Glad to hear it's not just me :) I've followed a few of those now only to have them disappear on me. I've learnt my lesson and have now stopped searching for them entirely as it's not much fun. Will raise a bug report when time allows.

Thanks for your kind words, sir!

I'll definitely work harder on making distant signatures, count on it! I'll probably be able to do this in the coming week or so.

Rep +1. Nice little cool tool.

I've taken the liberty of adding it to EDCodex, entry: "SRV Wave Scanner Object Identifier". It would be great if you would take over and enhance my attempt. Just register, and either use the "claim ownership" button or send me a pM with the email address your registered with - for identification.

In the OP you mentioned what would be a good place for this thread. On the 18th of January Bret C. created the brand new "Elite Dangerous->Gameplay and Features->Player Tools & API Development" subforum. All api-tools (EDCE,EDAPI and EDMC) are there and quite a lot of other tools as well - more and more are moving to there. EDCodex is also a sticky thread there. If you deem that a good place might I suggest using the report button for this thread and ask a moderator to move it. In general, a thread is moved quickly. If anything, your thread won't get snowed under fast by the forum mechanisms.

Thank you all for your comments and encouraging words!

I've made an update to the tool that may not look like much on the outside, but in the backend I believe I now have a much better platform to stand on for easier and more maintainable updates.
What you will see is an update in the way the scanner draws the signatures. One really tough cookie was to make it more realistic in the way it draws the signatures. I now have the basis of that implemented and will work on polishing that moving forward.

@Wolverine2710: I think that could be an excellent idea. If I can find a home for it where it makes the most sense and comes to its best use, there's where I'd like it to be. I'll take care of it tomorrow and request to have it moved.

Until next time, CMDRS

Still no sound through the iPad (i.e. Safari). Any idea what the problem might be? (let me know if I can help test any theories).

I'm going to look into this in much more details in the coming days. I really see the flaw in that this doesn't work correctly on Safari or Android Chrome enabled devices and something that I'm _very_ eager to fix.

So, I finally managed to do a bit of hacky-hack to make the audio play on mobiles! :D

I've so far tested on a Nexus 6, an Xperia Tablet Z and an iPhone (got knows what model.... 5...?) and they all seem to play along nicely.

Please test it and tell me if you find any issues.

Also, muy importante! If the scanner doesn't work at all, please clean your browser's cookies! I've done a few updates that may make the scanner not work (no sweepy movement thing and no audio), sorry for any inconvenience caused because of this. I'll be more vigilant in the future.

Until next time, CMDRS

Awesome! I can confirm that it now works on iPad mini. Thanks.

Hello all!

I've made an update to the scanner. It should now support iPhones in portrait up to 5S (6 and 6s will come later). I've also made adaptations to better fit screens such as Nexus 6 in portrait mode.

To summarise, the following phones should work pretty well in portrait:

  • iPhone up to 5S
  • Nexus 6, Nexus 5X
  • Sony Xperia Z3

Next steps are to work on enabling landscape tablet support and improved graphics for the signatures.

Until next time, CMDRS!

Smaller update that is not so noticeable for you all, but the more likely to make it speedier in adding features.

I have reworked a bit of the graphics templates I use for creating the base plates for all images, and will now most likely be able to make new ones much faster than before. What this means is that I'll be able to jot out landscape mode scanners for e.g iPads and Tablets in the near future.

I have also modified the code and the graphical elements that get drawn, so the totally black wave scanner background is now replaced with a whole backdrop of what the image looked like when I screenshot it (so the coloring and texture of the wave scanner background is now _much_ nicer).

I will also make improvements to the signature catalog now that I'm out of the woods of having investigated all this. In the coming week or so I'll make many more additions and cleanups, while jumping like crazy to catch up with the Distant Worlds Sprinter fleet. :)

Until next time, CMDRS
