Ships Top 10 Mining Ships

Hello! I’m back again. I’ve got a fresh new profile, with updated info and all that jazz. I didn’t expect anyone to see my recent posts, so I figured I’d say hi rather than posting my links and letting my account stay a husk.

Today’s article is something I’m actually pretty unfamiliar with - mining. I’m either a bloodthirsty PvE combat pilot in a Corvette, or a wholesome lady delivering passengers and/or exploring in my lil Dolphin. Mining is still new to me (and it shows… I’m still lacking bromelite). I’ve tried my hand at mining in my Dolphin, but I prefer being a space bus. I’m sure you can imagine my fear when faced with a headline about mining!

Either way, I did some research about good mining ships, and I’ve ended up with this article. Massive credit to the Pilot on Youtube for his amazing ship reviews.
So! Tell me about your experiences with mining! Do you have a playlist to keep you company? Watch any movies? I might take my Corvette mining for the giggles - why not?

I think it looks good, and it fits my experience with mining... at least with the ships I've used.

My all-purpose mining rig is a Python, and it works really well. If I want to just do gobs of surface mining, I'll use my Type-9 Heavy.

My first mining ship was the AspX, as it was the only ship I had, so I'd simply reoutfit it for different roles. This was pre-Engineering. It worked well enough for me to upgrade to the T9 and turn in enough Painite and other minerals to make Elite.

Keep writing!

Beginning to like your reviews.
Mining is an easy one for me
Fav Laser miner = T10, fast between rocks for a big ship and has internals that can handle plenty of Lasers.
Fav Core miner = Beluga (how did you guess?) just love it!

I tend to listen to re-runs of Infinite Monkey Cage on Beeb I-Player or if im feeling really intellectual i have some lectures that Prof Hawking did about Black Holes.
Music, im a Symphonic metal nut so Within Temptation or Nightwish and if i want to chill i love the sound track form LOTR.

Sometimes i just like to have nowt playing and enjoy the sound of rocks blowing up.

Corvette is actually a great mining ship. I have one with all the mining tools u need and 420+T cargo on top of that

Your article would be specifically for laser mining.
Core mining requires different qualities in a ship - power distributor does not have to be huge, but being fast and reasonably manoeuvrable is essential to find the next core and then move around it to get deposits after you've cracked it open. Phantom, Clipper and Orca work well. Yes I have done core mining in an Orca - it boosts to over 640m/s and that helps find the next core quicker and it has enough internal slots for a decent sized haul plus mining gear.

I use a Krait mk 2 as 1. Its not wider than a corvette, 2 it still boosts to 550, 3. It handles well to blast the deposits, 4 its got good internals 5. It has enough hardpoints for a charge launcher, 2 abrasion blasters and still 2 C3 hardpoints open to kill any pirates that want your juicy LTDs. Mine also has 1050 mj shield with a 25% thermo resist. The 2 open C3 is incindeary pacifiers. Easy to slap any pirate that wants my stuff.

Cutter is definitely the best miner. But only IF one has enough time to fill its cargo hold in a single session.
It has the speed and the shields needed to escape from pirates and enough weapon hardpoints to defend itself if needed.
And all these while still able to load at least 512t of cargo (my cutter build is doing 576t)

However, i rate the Conda as the next best miner generally speaking, and the best miner for shorter sessions.
320t of cargo, decent shields, enough hardpoints to have an Universal miner build and still be able to defend from the random NPC pirate.
And the most important feature - it has a forward cargo hatch that can be used in certain builds, greatly reducing the limpet travel and making up for one of the fastest laser miners

The best Core miner is undeniably the Clipper.
192t cargo is more than enough. It can pack enough shields and 2 large weapons to deal with whatever random NPC pirates.
And the most important thing for core mining: speed. The Clipper can still boost to 610, even with a cargo full of goodies.
Did i mentioned that it's highly maneuverable too?

Honorable mentions:
The Python is a real fast laser miner. Due to it's cargo hatch mounted in the right spot, behind the under-nose hardpoint, the limpets have really short return paths.

Cobra mk3 - good small core miner
AspX - good early miner

I think Fleet Carriers have changed mining quite a lot.
Using a FC you don't really need to fill 200t plus in one session, you go out in a medium or even small ship for 30 min to an hour for a change of pace, take all your cargo back to your FC, unload and decide if you want to go out again or wait until a later date.

Generally I try and find systems with pristine rings, res sites and an anarchy faction with a few assists, spend some time there filling up on the three P's and Osmium, bounties and Odyssey mats, then eventually look for somewhere buying the mined goods at a high price, jump sell, repeat. ;)

My miner of choice is the Krait MK11, as I've always liked looking at those mining lasers each side of the cockpit :)

Yep, Krait II is the other ship I occasionally do a bit of core mining in. When it comes to it, I do most stuff in the game in a Krait II outside of exploring. I still prefer a core mining ship that's faster, but there is always a compromise somewhere to be made when picking a ship for a purpose.

I go through phases of thinking I should actually buy the Clipper for core mining, but I don't go mining often enough to justify it and all the engineering. It always bugs me the Clipper doesn't fit on medium landing pads which will sometimes dent profits a bit.

My Clipper, Rico
The build could be probably improved using MLC (either extra collectors or an extra Guardian shield booster...)

I use corvette for laser mining its better than conda imo. Its got 6K shield and a C8 distro to handle 5 lasers then the big guns at the back to slap pirates. And unlike cutter it doesnt turn like a beached whale. Krait mk 2 over clipper for me in deep core. Its not wide as a anaconda can break 550 m/s and have 120T cargo while putting 2 abrasion blasters on mediums and charge launcher in center large. 2 incindeary pacifiers to dispatch pirates and 750 shield and your golden. Also looks much better than clipper.
