Total immersion.

What's the reason/advantage of having boots like that apart from being able to fire a bow and arrow with you feet, or increasing the odds of breaking your toes?

Japanese traditionally wore sandals (zori?) that had the strap between the toe like western "flip-flops". They wore tabi 'socks' with these that naturally were made in the same style to fit comfortably.

Tabi 'boots' evolved from that with the Ninja resurgence/craze of the last 30 years or so.

Went through a few pairs of tabi 'boots' myself back in my martial arts days. Had a soft pair of more traditional style cotton as well..

I dont even have to wear such boots in the public, to be recognized as a strange person :p

Probably walking around in public wearing the rift gets the strange looks. :eek:
 
Frankly I think we're all lucky the game doesn't have us absorbing high acceleration forces by being immersed in a tank of gel/fluid/goo. Real immersion!
