General / Off-Topic Track Days and Karting

What and where?

I would prefer karting at Teesside as
  1. I live there
  2. I drive a Mazda 3
I love Teesside, just a shame they don't open up the full international circuit that often.
One thing we could do would be to actually enter into a 6hr Iron man race as a single team.

As for the track day you can take any cars on there, it's not about driving faster than someone else, it's about having fun on a safe track.
October suits myself as far as track days are concerned as my car will have a few extra bits added by then and the new engine worn in. Not that bothered what track. More tight corners the better ;)

6hr? That's a 3 man team, tops. I did it as 2 man.

The 24 is better and that requires 4. More expensive though.
I've always raced as a 2 man team in competitive races...less driver changes = better result.

...or even a 3 hr race...I'm not referring to the British Honda Endurance Series that we've raced in. Sometimes Teesside just put on a daft endurance race for anyone to enter.

Teesside is a wee bit far for me unless I can get some decent overnight accommodation. I don't have a romper suit BTW - I assume you can hire them somewhere if necessary - and my helmet isn't a full-face jobbie.

Apart from that I'm good. :)

Still fancy a track day at Donington as well. Didn't one of you say you have a mate that runs days there?

I sure something could be arranged.
helmets and gear can be hired, so not an issue there.

I'm up for Donington. I think it was j^2 that mentioned it and had a friend.

Yup - a mate of mine runs Bookatrack. I'm happy to see if I can cadge a discount if 5 or more folk are interested in booking...

Edited to add:
I think the dates I suggested for Donington were 17 October and (98dB) and 21 October (unsilenced).

An alternative if folk want to do a Saturday rather than a weekday would be Oulton Park on 18 October. That's a selfish one for me as it's only 10 mins from home but it's the only way I can realistically do a weekend date.

Finally, found it.

The last 24hrs I've been trying to figure out a way to get my car track ready.

Had the racing 2.1 stroker engine rebuild 2 months ago. Remapping wasn't done right. Had it remapped again yesterday and it's night and day difference. Amazing.

The reason why my car isn't track worthy is due to it's breaks. I had some brown trouser moments at Croft before my dad blew my engine up. I don't want to put myself, or anyone else, in that position when driving my car.

I was looking at 8 pot K-sport racing brakes...I'm assuming you two are going to say get AP or Bremos :)
The problem with 8 pot brakes is they require 17" alloys, and my car has the vanilla 16" alloys.
The problem with 17" alloys is the two I want take 6+ weeks to be custom made. Frustrating.

So, I'm looking at the possibility of getting 6 pot brakes for the front, fitting under 16" alloys, then moving these to the back when I upgrade my alloys.

My question to you both is what pads do you use? DS2000?

While I've done motor racing most of my life this is the 1st time I've got into customising my own car for light track use. I only bought the scoob for fun and because it was so cheap I couldn't turn it down :)

@Woka dunno if I can be of any help here - everything is bog standard in the current car, although I had Porsche's own 'red' pads on the last one - a noticeable improvement over the standard units (which were a bit iffy for track use). I have considered having them on the new car, but in truth I like the car balanced for road use and the reds can be a bit fierce once they warm up. If I was really geeky about it of course, I'd have a separate set of wheels with cup tyres on just for track use! :p Feels nicely balanced as it is now though. We'll see... :)

Hi woka

Pagid RS14 every time for me on the Caterham. Fantastic stopping power, good longevity and excellent feel.

On the Elise, I run RS14s on the rear and RS4-2s on the front - combination of the Elise being a road car as well plus a lazy way changing the brake bias.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.
Ok, looks like I may be able to bring my scoob along on the 18th :D

My local "garage" is http://www.richardhenrymotorsport.co.uk/
They are a sprint race team, who also service the publics Evos and Imprezas.

Popped in this morning and had a chat with them. In the next few weeks they're going to add some nice extras to my car:

  • 6-Pot KSport racing brake calipers (fit under 16" alloys)
  • 304mm 2-piece slotted discs on the front.
  • High performance brake lines.
  • DS2500 pads front and back.
  • Front and rear anti roll bar

J^C, I think I may have told Andy this, my car is a 1999 Classic Uk Impreza 2000 Turbo (WRX). No mods when I bought it this year and in really, really good nick. The idea is to turn it into a light track car, fast road car.

Upgrades I have done already:

  • Engine Rebuild to 2.1Ltr Stroker racing engine, open deck, rated to 500bhp
  • Upgraded Oil Pump
  • Upgraded Fuel Pump
  • Oil sump baffles
  • New ECU and full remap

Currently the heads limit max rpm to 7500, two stage limiter cuts in at 7000 and 7200. Once the heads are done it will be 8500rpm.
The new upgraded engine produces 250-260 bhp.

Then, over the next year the aim is to look at the following:

  • Coilover Racing Suspension
  • 17" Racing Alloys
  • Decat Downpipe
  • New Turbo
  • Refresh heads, including STI values and injectors
  • Potentially 6 speed STI gearbox and racing clutch....potentially. One of the most expensive upgrades :(

Not a cheap hobby :)

Is the Caterham a dedicated track car?
Is it your toy or do you enter more serious races other than open track days?

Also, how do you get it to the track? You can't possibly tow it on a trailer on the back of the Elise...do you?!

Looked into track costs on Bookatrack and will get this booked as soon as I have confirmation that the work on my car can be done before 18th Oct.
You are both very welcome to take it out for a spin.

K.

Booked and good to go! :)

Edit: forgot to ask but sort of assuming anyway - it's the full circuit, right?
