buy in one station and sell to other, focus on profit. trade missions don't increase rank
Assuming that you're at the beginning of the game. There's no question that the easiest quick way to get your trade elite is by laser mining platinum. Start in a T6, then a Python, then an Anaconda, again assuming that you don't have access to a Cutter or Corvette. Mine it in the inner ring of the first planet in Hyades Sector DB-X d1-112.

This will get you about 40 mil per hour as a beginner:

I thought that too but I've lately been doing Source X tons of Y missions and my rank went up really fast.
No 'real' trading involved either. Just buying stuff and turning it in to the mission giver.
Trade rank is based on the profit made. So making the most profit in the least time is the way to rank quickly. Mining yeilds higher profit since you pay nothing for the chunks but takes longer to mine them in the first place.
Depending on where you are in your career/rank the ideal activity might be a little different. Late game, fleet carriers can get you from Elite to Elite V in like a day if you are only focused on the rank.
