Transferring mission cargo between ships

Is it possible to transfer mission cargo between ships?... For example, you've got some cargo to deliver in your type 7, and you realize that the destination only has small and medium pads... would be nice to be able to transfer the cargo to another ship so you don't have to abandon...

There is an easy solution to your problem. Crab's Cargo Reallocation Services (LLC)! That's right. For a small fee (plus travel expenses), I will come to your location where you can dump your cargo. I will scoop and hold it for you in safe keeping until you return in your other ship. Once you arrive in the ship of your choosing we will make the exchange and you are all set! Tell your friends! Crab's Cargo Reallocation Services is the pirate company you can trust!

Here is a testimonial from one of our happy clients: "I was in a quandary and didn't know what I would do with this load of Palladium and fish until Crabs showed up. Now I'm rolling in mf credits!" Commander [text redacted]

It that a feature request or a question as to whether it's possible? If the latter, which is how it sounded, then the short answer of "No" is quite sufficient. You can't change ships while there is cargo in your hold. The game simply won't allow it to happen. I don't know why; maybe they fold the ships up for storage?

If it was a feature request, then that's something that actually does warrant some discussion. I'd like to see better handling of goods, myself. Once we get planetary landings, I'd love to be able to store a cache of stuff on a planet somewhere—a few rare goods as a rainy-day fund in case of disaster. Someplace to store all of those black boxes and military plans until someone offers to pay me for them or I have enough to make it worthwhile to drag them somewhere.

But as things stand right now, there appears to be no architecture in place to allow that kind of thing. I have no idea if it's possible the way the game is constructed or not. I do hope that it is.

oh no my bad i totally thought it was a feature request - Sorry man. There were a number of threads the other day which WERE feature requests for this feature where people said no and didn't explain why. That confused me as i wanted to see if they had a well thought out reason i hadn't considered.

However in this thread i totally failed to correctly read the O.P. My bad.

Please explain why so a discussion can emerge.

i'm all for it provided there are some hard-limits so you can't buy a fleet of T7s or whatever and hold thousands of tonnage in limbo.

I've not seen any in-game mechanism to transfer cargo ship-to-ship, other than using a third party like Mr Crab was helpfully offering... ahem.

Akin to this, when parking one ship and swapping for another, the game requires that the cargo hold has to be empty on the current ship.

Ok, thanks for the replies all. :)

As a minimum, perhaps the mission could be listed as available but unobtainable (if current ship is too big to dock on destination)?
