Translation Debt: The Narrative Slayer for Elite Dangerous?

You should watch the Cornetto trilogy. I highly recommend it. 😁

If only actual learning was like this :D

Out of interest, has a lot of the lore wound up in the ED RPG instead of the game?

The ED:RPG had what was called "Lore Free" Licence for the RPG textbook. Quite what "Lore Free" actually meant was never defined to my knowledge, but I take it to mean that they could put in their book pretty much anything that Frontier was happy to approve, with the proviso that Frontier didn't actually have to adhere to it in Elite Dangerous at a later date (non binding).

Unfortunately, if that interpretation is correct, it means that the ED:RPG isn't really a definitive source of canon lore as it applies to the game, more a sort of Elite Dangerous themed RPG - which I guess was the point.

Compare and contrast with Dave Hughes' EE:RPG, which did have an official lore licence. Vast quantities of material was cut out of that prior to publication, but what remains in it is 'actual' canon ED lore.

Cheers,

Drew.

FD is not a welfare institute. Apparently the game sells with minimal budget. Now we can argue whether games should have artistically ambitioned dev studio but since the game never got to narrate stuff properly I'd say they just dont have the talent for making story driven games anyway.

Agreed on the welfare. ED could, I suspect, generate significantly more revenue (and hence profit) with more emphasis on the lore and narrative given that it has a background that has a long standing legacy bigger than most space games. Talent? Oh they have the talent, they don't have the executive vision, direction or permission. They have decided that the game as it stands is sufficient. From a purely financial/ROI perspective, that is a perfectly rational stance to take, but (IMHO) it's rather a disservice to the legacy of the franchise.

Cheers,

Drew.
