Horizons Trapped by engineers

I am trying engineers for the first time, but seem to have become trapped. Having eventually found and mined the version of rocking horse   poo   metal for a level two upgrade, been killed by npc pirates, repeat then finally escaped with my haul I still need to gather the other stuff for the blueprint. Time for a rest and a bit of combat fighter therapy… but oh no, I need a ship with sufficient cargo space to carry the rocking horse  poo    around until I stumble on the other stuff needed – while I get constantly interdicted for said cargo. Not intended as a rant, but why no storage – even if it is with the engineer? I was hoping horizons would add new play-styles not restrict them.

I suggest a different approach. Go live your life in E:D and gather the mats until you need commodities to complete a build, then go get them and head directly to the engineer. Try to pursue activities which will get you what you need as you go along instead of fixating on a single thing or set of things.

I know, there's no instant gratification in that method (or any other, as it's not designed to be that way)... but there's also a LOT less frustration. Trying to rush the Engineer stuff is painfully tedious in my experience.

Been there done that...

Collected stuff in one of my Cargo Haulers (Mission Rewards) and then thought great, I can use that stuff for my Combat Ship.
Docked... dangit :D ... Combat Ship has 0 Cargo space, cancel that plan.

So now all my Combat Ships basically get a Cargo Rack after I park them. Just in case.
Eventually gets into the (mildy risky) swapping of High-Grade Modded HRPs into other Ships in order not to lose them, but it's the only way I can give them that Cargo space.

Thus, all in all, it just requires prior planning of how to approach things.
Hoarding isn't a good Option (many already found out), but even planning ad-hoc trips with a random Mission Reward has it's traps and surprises if the own Ships aren't prepared for it.

Thanks for the responses. Should have got everything but the cargo first and only then the cargo items. Not hoarding; just wrong order. Still, storage would make the process a little more pleasant.

But when you try to gather mats and commodities you invariably end up with so much other stuff which isn't useful for your current objective, but will be later when you want to outfit a new ship for example. Under the current system, depending on what you're trying to get, there is so much wastage.

So you end up having to grind for so much longer, for no good reason, other 'STOP HORDING LMAO'. I'm sure that there's space somewhere in the entire galaxy for a warehouse i.e ship independent storage box.

I can't think of any other game that has such strange limitations and contradictions.

You can't store cargo, but you do have an infinitely sized wallet.
You need to buy a refinery for mining, but every ship somehow has a missile factory\bullet factory\all sorts of wonderful and sophisticated things (synthesis) located...somewhere.
You can store the biggest freighter in the game at a station for free, indefinitely, but it cant keep its cargo inside while it's doing it...
You can't carry any sort of cargo without creating the risk that a psychic, suicidal pirate will track you down for a 'big haul' - even if said haul is worth about 300cr...

I really like this game and I think it's amazing, but with some basic QOL additions, it could be absolutely incredible, and it's utterly baffling that they haven't been added.
