Trip to Orion

Commander's Log April 13th 3303

After visiting Sol and paying my respects to my Ancestors I have decided to complete my lifelong goal of visiting all the stars in Orion. I have left the bubble and have plotted my route to the first star in Orion's Belt; Alnitak.
I discovered a water world orbiting a distant B star. Other than that all the systems I have visited have been mundane with nothing but ice and rock.
Hopefully tomorrow will have more to discover.

105 jumps to Alnitak.

Commander's Log April 14th 3303

When re-plotting my route to Alnitak this morning after I awoke the number of jumps increased. I wonder what could have caused this. I am starting the day with 119 jumps remaining.
Nothing of note today, many systems I visited were just a star and nothing more. Some had multiple stars but no planets at all.
I found a system with five stars all orbiting each other.
Hopefully tomorrow will have more to discover.

108 jumps to Alnitak.

Commander's Log April 15th 3303

The first system I visited today was finally worth exploring. I discovered a gas giant with water based life! I landed on a nearby moon to use my camera limpets to document the discovery.

The next planetary system over had a water world with a large ring system. I decided to test out my camera limpets while I was still in super cruise to see how they did while I was moving.4.15.3303_Water_World_Rings.PNG
It was a good day for exploring. Looking forward to tomorrow

Had nightmares of bunnies throwing eggs at me. Did not want to fly with zero sleep, I will adventure forth tomorrow.
Hopefully tomorrow will have more to discover.

Commander's Log April 17th 3303

Made a good amount of progress today. I was exploring a system when I found a planet and its moon nearly touching each other in their orbit. I landed on the moon for some sight seeing but almost crashed trying to fly in between the two. The planet had a close orbit with its parent gas giant that made for a nice view.

My navigation seemed to find a faster economical route than before cutting some jumps out. It may have been caused by the time I spent to different stars in earlier systems.
It was a good day for exploring. Looking forward to tomorrow.

82 jumps to Alnitak.

Beware, there are a few stars in the constellation "Orionis" that are not in game. There are also some stars in the game that have no entry in the Wikipedia list.
And a few stars can't be reached without jumponium, plus some may be permit locked (funny thing is they were not permit locked prior to Horizons launch).
Still more, at least one of the stars is totally in the wrong place in E: D galaxy, and many are named weirdly in E: D (HIP & HD cataloque numbers are good search options for most).

That said, I'm happy to see a fellow explorer embarking on the great journey of becoming a master of Orion! [up]

My tale, put very short, here:

Thanks for the tip. I am string with Orion's belt and going from there. If I can't make some of the jumps in my current Asp I will return to the bubble to cash in my exploration data then wait until I get a higher jump range to return. The new camera suite has made exploring so much fun.

Commander's Log April 18th 3303

Today was an uneventful day of exploring. All the systems I visited only had rock and ice planets, there weren't even any interesting orbits to see. I ended up bookmarking all of Orion's stars that I could find in the star map. I already passed two of the major stars that I will have to hit on my return trip but luckily Betelgeuse is right along the path to Altinak.
Hopefully tomorrow will have more to discover.

75 jumps to Altinak.

Commander's Log April 19th 3303

I changed my end target temporarily to Betelgeuse, the recalculation of my route started taking me farther away from it so changing my target was the best way to get their during my journey. I explored some high metal content worlds with one orbiting only 23 Ls away from its star.

I am looking forward to making it to my first destination in the next few days.
It was a good day for exploring, looking forward to tomorrow.

20 jumps to Betelgeuse.

Good luck with your journey. I attempted the same thing over 12 months ago now, trying to reach the 7 main stars that make Orion. One eluded me. When you eventually get beyond the nebula itself, one star was beyond a 'wall'. You see it on the Gal Map if you rotate it and look side on. The star density suddenly drops off, and while making some progress beyond the wall and it being pre Jumponium/Neutron/White Dwarf jumping/Engineered FSD's I couldn't reach it (it was my first journey into the black and I took an extra Fuel tank too .... the idiot!).

I'll update my post tomorrow with more detail of which was the 'culprit' when I find it in my scribbles.

It would be nice to know which stars you plan to visit, as was previously mentioned some are not named the same in game but can be found with a little google magic.

Good Luck though, and enjoy.

Today was a fantastic day for exploring. Many of they systems I visited had more than ice and rock, and those that hand landable planets I checked for high amounts of Vanadium before continuing to the next system. Many systems that I visited today had high metal planets but the most interesting was this large icy planet with ice rings.

Looking forward to the far legs of my trip I decided that I should stop by a planet and get the materials needed to boost my FSD jump range. My Asp which I have named the SS Toasty has a jump range of 36 so I am not worried about any of my jumps except trying to reach Epsilon Orionis. The planet I landed on had a makeup of 5% Germanium and gathered enough for 20 jumps if needed.

After leaving the planet I continued my exploration until I finally made it to my first star in Orion; Betelgeuse.

Jumping in left me awestruck at the sheer size of the star compared to all the class M,T and dwarf stars I had seen along the way. The high metal content world closest to Betelgeuse is so hot it is just liquid metal rolling along like waves. I scanned the rest of the system and found that the third planet from Betelgeuse had 9% Vanadium. No other planet I had checked so far had more than 4% so this is a jackpot!

It was a good day for exploring. Looking forward to tomorrow

Was is Epsilon Orionis?

Yes it was. I might give it a go now, you have me intrigued again :)

Betelgeuse, Bellatrix, Mintaka, Alnitak, Saiph and Rigel being the others I visited.

Edit: Permit locked so you can't go there now.
Epsilon Orionis is reachable without engineering or jumponium etc., stripped-down Asp can do it. And Anaconda of course, maybe even DBX now that they altered it.

One just needs to be careful how to continue travels:

Commander's Log April 21st 3303

Today when I awoke on the planet I landed on I was shrouded in darkness. I set out to explore the surface and find some Vanadium to be able to make a long jump if needed. I was hoping that I would be able to see the sunrise of Betelgeuse but didn't want to wait the hours necessary so instead I climbed a mountain and looked at my goal on the horizon.
4.21.3303_Goal_On_Horizon.PNG

I had collected enough Vanadium for 15 longer jumps so I set my sights on Saiph the next closest star on my trip to visit Orion. In one of the systems I visited I found a blue-tan gas giant and I had not seen that combination of colors before, however what was really interesting to see was a planet orbiting right outside of the rings. I really wanted to land on the planet to view the rings from the surface but it had an atmosphere of methane that my ship has not been outfitted to deal with.
4.21.3303_Blue_Tan_Gas_Giant.PNG

I continued on towards Saiph and found my first system with two stars close enough together that I could see them both and still tell what they were.
4.21.3303_Close_Stars.PNG

I can't wait until I get to Saiph and check another location off of my list. The explorations data I have gathered from scanning every planet in each system will hopefully help select some systems to gain a station or two.

It was a good day for exploring. Looking forward to tomorrow.

20 jumps to Saiph.

Commander's Log April 22nd 3303

I didn't get many jumps in today due to each system having so many planets to explore. I almost died when I jumped into my final system of the day. As I came out of hyperspace I saw a Class A star appear for an instant before I reached the Class B star I was flying to. When I turned my ship around I realized I had missed flying through the class A star by only a fraction of a degree. I then looked at my system map to discover that these binary stars were in a binary pair with another set of binary stars.

All in all I give this discovery Four Stars... ah its lonely out in space by myself.

It was a good day for exploring. Looking forward to tomorrow

14 jumps to Saiph

Commander's Log April 23rd 3303

Today I explored the four star system I ended in yesterday and a few more systems on my way to Saiph. The four star system has something like 40 unexplored objects for me to go through. That took a very long time to get through all of them so I didn't make as many jumps as I would like. The good news is that most of the non gas planets I have been exploring have been high metal content with some water worlds sprinkled in. It would be great if some of them were terraformable.

Hopefully tomorrow will have more to discover.

10 jumps to Saiph

Commander's Log April 24th 3303

Not much to report today, all the systems I visited had a large number of orbiting planets. One star had eight planetary bodies with a radius of only 500km. I had to almost land completely on them for my scanner to start picking them up. Another star I visited only had a single pink planet orbiting it, to my surprise when i scanned the planet it ended up being a water world. I was only able to make a few jumps today but at least I found some planets worth scanning.

Hopefully tomorrow will have more to discover.

5 jumps to Saiph.

Commander's Log April 25th 3303

I finally made it to Saiph. Two down six to go. I was kind of bummed that there were no planets in the Saiph system, nothing I could land on to give a sense of scale to the star. I have now set my sights on Mintaka which will be the first star in Orion's belt that I will visit followed shortly by Alnitak. I learned that Meissa is under a name that is difficult to guess and is why I haven't been able to find it. I am pretty sure I haven't missed it yet and that it should be between Alnitak and Epsilon Orionis but we will see.
4.25.3303_Saiph.PNG

Visiting the stars in order based on distance has made the legs of the trip much more enjoyable. Seeing only 10 jumps remaining excites me that I will be able to make it to the star before I must rest.

It was a good day for exploring. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Meissa is 39 Lambda Orionis in E: D.

And shouldn't you say: "Two down, six to go" ? ;)
