Hardware & Technical Triple monitor advice.

The main issue with the triples at that size is the incredible image distortion to the left and right. You need to have your head and monitors in the perfect camera position to counter it. If you do it, and the gpu can cope, try them in portrait. Elite is more of an up-down game than a left-right game (for me, anyway) and I prefer it like that. It does cut down on the edge-stretching too.

I went from 3x 27" Dell Ultra sharps back to a single 'Large 40" Phillips' Monitor. Much prefer the single large monitor. The 2 side monitors seem to 'Magnify' the screen image giving an unrealistic feel about it. You also have to play with the FOV setting quite a bit........

It's a personal thing really, maybe i did not give ED a real chance in 3 monitors, but for me i feel more immersed in a single LARGE monitor

Yeh i got that monitor as well, 3 monitors forget it, lol

The edge stretching is just a function of FOV - you get it in all games, and it makes objects on the far/left right seem much larger than they actually are. You don't really notice it as your attention is focused on the center montior most of the time. It's quite handy as a "poor man's zoom" though - i.e. fly parallel to a station, look to the left and you get a "zoomed in view", which is handy for spotting police etc ;)

It's just one of those things with tripleheaded, but the increase in situational awareness and dare I say it "immersion", is worth it.

It is more a game issue than a monitor issue. The rendering projection scheme used works well for a small FoV. I wish we had options for different schemes to cope with UW better, but it probably doesn't affect enough people to make it far on Frontier's wish list.

Just make sure you have 3 equal monitors. I bought a 3 screen setup, one central 30" and two 20" screens flanking it. NVidia drivers can't deal with it, and Elite won't allow you to select the full resolution of all screens like DCS will.

Yes, edge distortion is there even in apps like X-Plane 10 flight simulator which has all kinds of viewing options to dial in the cockpit dashboard size versus the outside world. The designer Laminar Research provided a solution to correct the distortion running X-Plane simultaneously on multiple PCs. I don't know if Frontier could do the same with ED.

Looking at the pretty setups I KNOW they are not real life! The Commanders probably spent 20 minutes removing all the paper notes, empty snack bags, left over French fries, coffee/beverage stains, and the soft pillow in the seat for those many hours spent in it! :)

Regards to all

only have to mess with the FOV a bit, but it looks sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettt!!! :D

3 monitors of that resolution is a lot of pixels! More than 4k. So check if your GPU is up to it first.

Maybe also consider getting a single ultra-wide monitor instead. There's plenty of 34" 3440x1440p models now, some with G-sync and the other one. I like this approach as no borders to get in the way. Does make Windows desktop use a bit different though. You can still keep the old monitor connected for secondary activities like robbyp mentions.

I know this is an old thread but.. I just took your advice and bought a 34 inch Gsync Predator 34. Wow what an experience.

I love my 3 monitor set up but my tech is only at the mid/high graphic settings but I love it
Think it's just a matter of personal taste but I'm so glad I did it ;)

Great looking setup - except for all the cables down below! Get some velcro straps and clean all that up and hide it!!

For the OP - I've used 3 monitor setups for almost 15 years now. Initially at work (network engineering) then as monitors got cheaper home, etc. When I use a PC with only 1 screen (laptop) it drives me nuts as I'm so used to stretching out across 3. 5760x1080 is a lot of pixels, what card are you running? I'd say you want a 980, maybe 970 minimum and even then you won't get Ultra out of Elite (at 60 fps).

Elite on triples is pretty damn sweet but doesn't really add a ton, other than a larger image space. You can't see much on you left/right monitors due to the way the view is. So they're there but not super additive. If you're looking for some kind of "Elite Display Upgrade" and you don't want to go VR (which would be similar in price, if not cheaper than 3 27" monitors) would a projector work? Anywhere for a screen? Seeing Elite on a 100" screen on the wall is pretty damn sweet.

Personally I'll always have 3 monitors in my setup, if anything for productivity. As I mostly game in VR now I don't need all 3 but they are still great to have. I'm moving soon and am planning to do a 6 display setup. 3x27" and 3x24" in two rows of three. I've got all the mounting I just need to bolt it all together. Again this would be for productivity, I'd use the main/bottom 3 for some gaming (DOOM 2016 on triples is VERY cool BTW). Racing titles are also great on triples.

im thinking of buying 2 extra g-sync monitors, but is it worth only for elite? is it problems setting up?
im a total noob when it comes to more than one monitor and gaming..

so triple 2560x1440.

I have three 27" monitors.

I don't use them for Elite Dangerous - why? Because they haven't properly implemented multi-monitor support. The images on the 'side' monitors are stretched and look utter garbage. Round planets become ovoids.

I think I saw (when I was looking for multi-controller support) in the old days - Alpha / beta - that people complained about this and were told 'wait a year, it's gonna be awesome'.

It's been longer than that, and this 'bug' has never been addressed.

With the focus on console - don't expect it ever to be.

It's so poorly implemented that I just turn the side monitors off to play elite, and as mentioned stick with TrackIR.

DCS however - they know how to code and do 3 monitors (and more) well. Take a look.

I had 3 1920X1200 24" monitors and dropped it for using one 24" for desktop access and a 34" 3440X1440 for ED. Huge improvement in every way. I'll not be going back to triple monitors for ED. I'm planning a new build toward fall 17 and hope that the ne 38" 3840X1600 monitors will be better by then. One big wide monitor works really well. You may have to manually edit the FOV in the graphics xml to get the best result, but that's pretty simple.

If there's a good 38" G-Sync available in the fall, I'll definitely go that way and use my 34" on my second account.

I used to use a triple screen setup and found that this:
Let's also be clear about "what" we're playing on a triple setup as all games don't lend themselves well to it
Is a really important thing to consider before diving in on a triple monitor setup.

In my case I found it to be a mostly aggravating experience technically since I play a wide variety of newer and older titles and would regularly find bizarre happening when I'd hit a game that reacted badly to my setup. I'd have to shut my side monitors off just to get things to behave and over time that got grating. But, if you're primarily a sim gamer then triple screens can be a fantastic (if system taxing) experience.

I experimented with using a Visio D-40U D1 for my computer screen with my Track IR perched on top and a portrait mode 24" side monitor and love it a lot more than my old triple screen setup. Huge real estate, great picture quality, and since it's sitting just a couple feet in front of me it fills my field of vision incredibly well. I do lose the peripherals but like GhostBuster noted, Elite doesn't really have proper triple monitor support so it kinda looked like anyway.

I think if you're primarily an Elite player you're better off with going with a single large main gaming screen since we do have some really fantastic, large, high resolution options available these days or just saying screw it and buying a VR headset.
