Hardware & Technical Triple Monitor FOV Support?

Hi,

Does anyone know how much support there will be for triple monitors?

Specifically will I be able to set the angles and bezel sizes so I get a a 'correct' cockpit view? iRacing does this very well, they have a tool that lets you change all theses settings, including your eye distance form the screen and it calculates the FOV for your setup.

Thanks for any info.

To be honest, I hope that they will be focusing on one monitor for the first release!

That's just it - it *is* one monitor as far as the game is concerned. It just happens to have a resolution of 5040x1050 or thereabouts. But you need to be able to change the field of view, otherwise it won't display correctly.

And also have some way to limit the UI to the central portion of the screen.

Shouldn't really be a problem.

Modifying the target resolution and the FOV of the camera should just be a couple of parameters passed once into the rendering code at start-up.

Question from the clueless: Does triple monitor gaming like this give you three views at once - that is, out of port and starboard from your cockpit as well as forward?

Or does it just elongate the forward view?

It elongates the desktop of the computer. The application has to be written to include more than a 60 (or smaller) degree angle in order to take advantage of it.

I feel that this is the sort of thing that should come after initial release. Lets get the game out first and running well, then release the "nice to have" updates. But it should definately be available as a supported setup within 6 months or so, with proper field of view and the ability to push HUD elements out etc.

The inner geek says "I gotta get me some of that. The bank manager says "You can't afford the monitors".

I have to say that I know nothing about such things, but I imagine that it would take some significant effort to optimize an engine to pump out 3 times more pixels at a decent rate. Or is it all handled by the graphics card?

Seriously guys, forget the triple or double screen whatnot. Just get a good single wide screen and keep you fingers crossed that the game will support TrackIR. It's far far more immersive than any multiscreen setup (The opinion of a hardcore flightsimmer). :D

So, just replace the cockpit in the video above with the ships cockpit from newsletter 8.

The graphics card does it - it's no more than a larger display resolution and higher field of view setting. Obviously, you need a better gfx card to pump out that many pixels at a decent rate, but you don't have to do anything specific programming wise for it.

I run triple headed, but still use the TrackIR ;)

I don't see the point of all the double screen chat with radars/whatnot on a second screen - sounds too much like EvE to me if it needs that level of micromanagement.

Once nice big screen (spread across 3 monitors), and TrackIR support will do nicely. I can wait for Rift support later (or use VorpX/Virieo hopefully - as long as there's TrackIR support, head position should be available).

I'd like to see proper support for triple screens as well. Funnily enough the reason I already have a triple screen set up is for iRacing.

All you need is FOV support - the bezel management is provided out of the box by Eyefinity or Nvidia surround.

All the latest race sims are capable of multiple monitor view at release, so I don't see why this should be any different.

I would like to add that it is a shame this has been moved to the off topic forum.
It is NOT off topic.
It is very much an expected feature in todays racing, flight and first person sims.
Moving it to off topic is not really going to highlight the appetite for it in Elite Dangerous.
:(
